Methods of Contraception
Contraception is used to prevent pregnancy. The best way to prevent unintended pregnancy in sexually active women is through consistent and proper use of contraceptives. No contraceptive method works perfectly and all contraceptive methods besides abstinence have risks. Most contraceptives do not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases [STD’s].
• Sterilization Tubal ligation & Vasectomies are a permanent form of contraception.
Voluntary surgical contraception [VSC] is one of the most widely used methods of contraceptives worldwide after the desire family size has been achieved.

If it is reversible it is often expensive, difficult, and not always successful. Requires counseling to ensure patients understand all aspects of procedure. Major risks are usually caused by infection. Vasectomy requires another contraceptive method until semen no longer contains sperm.
Two new forms of sterilization have come about these include:
Essure System involves a small coil being inserted into the fallopian tube. Which result in permanent blockage of the fallopian tube that is less evasive.
Adiana System uses radiofrequency to remove a small amount of the tissue layer and then a silicone implant is inserted in the tube and the tube becomes permanently blocked over the next three months. This procedure can be preformed in the physician’s office. …show more content…
Condoms, sponges, diaphragm or cervical cups. These methods avoid use of systemic hormones, some offer protection against STD’s. Some of these methods require preparation before intercourse and some may interfere with sensation.
Spermicides- Quick and easy to use. Requires no prescription. Inexpensive per single use, provides lubrication. May be messy, no douching for 6 hours following use. Contraindicated when women have allergies to latex or components of the spermicide. Films and suppositories must melt prior to them taking effect. Effects of spermicide can act from 1-8 hours. New application necessary for repeated intercourse.
Condoms- Quick and easy. THE BEST protection against STD’s, can be carried discretely. Vaginal condoms protect women from STD’s and increase control over contraceptive use. Must check expiration and for holes. Can break or slip off, can be used only once. Female condoms can be seen as unattractive.
Sponges- available over the counter. Can be inserted several hours before intercourse. Effective for repeat intercourse. No protection from STD’s must remain in place for 6 hours after last intercourse, but no longer than 30 hours, may cause irritation. Risk for toxic shock syndrome if left in for to
