The activity levels in the brain differ from Non REM and REM dreaming. The brain is most active in REM dreaming with parts such as the Brain Stem, Visual Association Area, Motor Cortex and Amygdala activated. Though there are many active areas of the brain in REM dreaming there are also inactive areas as well; like the Prefrontal Cortex. For Non REM dreams …show more content…
The Prefrontal Cortex is inactive during REM dreaming which could cause the erratic dreams from the Prefrontal Cortex being the area of reasoning and planning. As for Non REM dreams with the brain being inactive, everyday or repetitive activities would be dreamed with your brain being very similarly in an autopilot state. (Grison, Heatherton & Gazzangia, Chapter 3, 2015).
Typically dreams are not remembered either being REM or Non REM dreams. This is because dreaming is part of an unconscious, sleeping state. Even though most dreams are forgotten there are many theories behind the point of dreaming. Scientists have formed theories behind the reason of dreaming but have not figured out the exact biological reason behind dreaming. (V. Hill, Personal Communication, January …show more content…
The reason that Continuity Hypothesis would be used to interpret the dream is because the student is trying to resolve his daily conflict of dealing with his feeling for his friend, Kathy, who does not share those same feelings. This constant rejection he faces on a daily bases from Kathy would be something that the brain would need to resolve with dreaming. The second theory that could fit this dream was Memory Theory. Memory Theory would also fit this dream because of the student reprocessing memories from his school day. In the dream there is a huge portion that takes place during a schoolroom and school. The memories from that day in school could be linked to why in his dream the location would be at a school and why he would associate school with Kathy in the dream as well. The association of Kathy fits Memory Theory from him probably having many memories with and about Kathy that developed during school. Most likely school is the same place that Kathy rejects his feelings for her, him from he being so surprised that Kathy didn’t reject him at school during his dream. (V.
