This activity will also help me to be keener on what to look for when handling a future patient. It teaches me not only to look for objective cues of a physical illness but also to dig dipper on the subjective sign and symptoms of a possible mental problem of a patient. According to (Downey, Zun, & Burke 2011;2012) that patient who has mental illness is more prone to suffer from medical condition as compared to the general population. Therefore, it is vital to pick out immediately this patient before further complication could happen on their general health status. A personal experience, when I was working as a rural health nurse. I used to have an elderly patient who frequently visits me complaining of a headache without any signs of trauma and has normal vital signs. He also kept complaining that the Paracetamol I was giving him does not give any relief. I soon discover from our conversation that he was living alone because his family had abandoned him. I then knew at that point that he was lonely and depressed and the only thing that can help him is someone who will care and give him attention. It also open my eyes and helped me realize the complexity and severity of the effect on mental illness especially depression which is the leading cause of years lived with disability and suicide. About 60 – 70% of adult worldwide experience depression at some point in their life and studies show that it is very treatable with 80 – 90% of patient recovering when appropriate intervention is given (McRory, 2012). However, two decades worth of research also revealed that nurses that care for these patients had difficulty distinguishing the early sign of depression as well as the development of diagnosis and the proper formulation of care plan for the treatment (Shakib, Stanners, Barton, & Winefield, 2012). Therefore, to become an effective primary health care provider for mentally ill patient in the future. I need to focus and do more learning about the early cues of mental illness such as decrease interest in activity of daily living, agitation, impaired decision making and many more and how to correctly construct a care plan for these
