When examining the theology of worship and praise, the bible says that communication, scriptural lyrics, and music will help churches evangelize and disciple congregants. These three parts of worship will help unravel the argument against contemporary worship, but need to be based out of scripture in order to do so. Communication between the worshiper and God is an integral part of worship. “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23-24) In this verse, Jesus himself says that God is looking people who will worship him by connecting with him spiritually. Everyone involved in worship agrees that communication is essential. Both traditionalists and contemporary worshipers agree on this topic. T. David Gordon observes the importance of communication and states. One criterion for selecting hymns is that the lyrics and music are appropriate for a meeting between God and his people. (Gordon 47) Contemporist John Frame also declares communication significant. “We do not glorify God if we fail to communicate with him on the human level.” (Frame 18) The argument, however lies in the style of the music and which style can communicate most effectively. Singing lyrics that are of the modern day, thus used by most people in today’s world, is a strong foundation for establishing communication. Most congregations have departed from king james english because it hinders communication if it is predominantly used in worship. (Frame 19) This alone is the main reason that so many churches have switched to contemporary worship. Traditional worship is great in many aspects. It has scriptural lyrics and the music is sound on an aesthetic level. However, communication is what is important first and foremost. Contemporary music creates an atmosphere where the spirit of God can connect with the people who are worshiping him.
