Dr. Cheever is portrayed as a deeply empathetic individual who wants to do as much good as he possibly can for as many people as he possibly can. One could characterize Dr. Cheever’s particular leadership strategy as one of bounded empathy. One the one hand, Dr. Cheever realizes that there are certain things that must be done regardless of how he feels about them, as when he sends his assistant out on field duty to Minneapolis who as a result contracts the virus and dies.
