While being pregnant we commonly know that whatever we intake into our bodies, will affect the child we are carrying. Just as we are taught to make sure we take our prenatal vitamins to ensure our child is receiving the vitamins they need to grow and develop. This is no different than what the NID released in 2012 stating that “Prenatal use of some drugs, including opioids, may cause a withdrawal syndrome in newborns called neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).” Which goes to show us that our consumption while pregnant, whether good or bad, will affect the infant.

Any pregnancy can be both exciting and worrisome. The 9 months of the unknown between the doctor visits and ultrasounds can be unnerving to say the least. While for a pregnant woman addicted to drugs it can be out right tragic for some children. The unsubstantiated nervous thoughts of a mom to be will with normal pregnancy can be downright fearsome for an addict mother. Who cannot quit the substance cold turkey for fear of trauma it can cause her unborn baby and the fear of the unforeseen birth defects she is apt to be facing. Both pregnancies can run full term, but less likely for some addicted children. Both mothers will feel and forever know how a child growing inside hers feels.
