It also gives ideas of how people value new products and discredit old consumer products. | 6.Lastly, the text I’ve chosen is a cartoon by Clay Butler. It shows a businessman advertising a consumer product to people. The man selling the product is shown with swirly eyes which gives the effect that he is hypnotizing the customers. Clay Butler attempts to suggest the idea that people are brainwashed into buying products in today’s society. The customers are shown with blank white eyes which suggests they are blinded by what the product is and only buying it because it is cheap. | 7.Their teeth are also white and perfectly straight. This implies that they have fixed it to fit in with people which suggests that they have been brainwashed and influenced by the consumer society into feeling the need of having perfect teeth. The idea of people being judged for what possessions they have can also be raised to this. | | 8. As you can see Dawe’s poetry and Clay Butler’s cartoon consisting of powerful images and ideas raise many issues that affects readers and their world. They attempt to give the message of how consumerism and materialism has a negative impact to today’s society. | |
