Consumerism has a major effect on American cultural society. Consumerism is one of the main factors when influencing a person on what they should purchase to fit in to American cultural society. This happens because the advertiser tells us what is to be desired, as Jay Chiat explains “robs us of the most intimate moments in our lives because it substitutes an advertiser’s idea of what ought to be” (213). This makes consumerism and advertising ultimately decide what is considered the right option to purchase, if you want to fit in to that society.
