Consumer Math Class Analysis

Decent Essays
One thing that I'm currently taking in school is an example of something I think is pointless right now but I'm starting to realize it could help me. This class is consumer math. The things we are learning right now and have been doing in this class is things that are obvious and I've known from having a job. Things such as hourly wages and time-and-a-half for overtime. I get bored going over simple things that I already know and it makes me wonder why I'm having to learn it all again. So it gives me no motivation to do anything in this class because I know I can get an easy grade without putting in much effort to the assignments.

But now that we've watched some the the Dave Ramsey videos I'm starting to realize that this class can teach

Kohn’s article “The Case against Grades” (Kohn, 2011) effectively captures the anxiety that most students have about grades. “In fact, students would be a lot better off without either of these relics from a less enlightened age” (Kohn, 2011) Kohn writes. I agree with Kohn’s position in this article because there were many days in high school where I remember skipping due to the fact that I didn’t fully understand what was being taught to me. I, in turn, grew anxious about not being good enough and started failing.…

What A Failure: Aurora Public Schools Focus on something for a moment. Imagine a child in elementary school school, and their teachers talk of the importance of education, to have their homework on time, to pay attention in class, study hard, maintain punctuality, and know that all of this will pay off one day. Now stop! Get rid of that notion to which everything is going to be okay, because suddenly they find out that those values programmed into them from day one, are a fallacy. The homework has nothing to do with what they will eventually need to focus on in middle and high school.…

The High Five Messages Change Is Constant In the game My Personal GPS, I had to guide an avatar through a series of games that tested my learning skills and work habits. At the end of the level, you either passed and were awarded a key, or failed and had to retry the game. For some of these games, I didn 't receive a key on my first try and had to repeat the level until my skills matched my evaluation. This caused me to have to rethink my avatar’s actions and adapt to the different situations I was put in.…

I never knew that motivations had so many components to it. Inexperienced teachers wrongly assume that what motivated them as a kid will motivate their classes. Nope wrong. If you use the wrong motivation technique it can cause a kid to back off and to lose their spark. Teachers have great power, but need to recognize it and use it in a conscious, intentional way.…

My passion for marine biology and medical studies have pushed me to take the hardest classes offered and expose myself to a variety of research opportunities. I am at the top of my class at St. Thomas University and I easily got there. The coursework and classes they offer are way below my capabilities and I struggle to keep interested and engrossed during class due to the lack of difficulty. I am bored, have a ridiculous amount of free time, and catch myself getting far ahead of the lessons currently being taught. I love learning new things but nothing new is being taught.…

What is the difference between citizens and consumers? The answer to this question may seem apparent upon first glance but with some thought, many parallels can be drawn between the two. The authors, Michael Schudson and Cass Sunstein, have both pondered citizens versus consumers through their writing. While Schudson simply compares the two in, “The Troubling Equivalence of Citizen and Consumer,” Sunstein brings the influence of social media into his chapter, “Citizens”. The internet has diminished the differences between citizens and consumers.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

Sometimes students will learn material just for the incentive of the grade, and then dump it, which is not learning at all. The teacher should realize this, and try teaching material in a different way. The concept of learning is clearly shown that it is ultimately up to the teacher as to how well the students will understand the material. They have the most influence on the students.…

2.2.1 Power Distance (PDI): Hofstede (1983) explained how a society handles the inequality among people within a group. According to a recent study of Sian et al (2010), In a high Power Distance index society, people accept their social hierarchical position and accept that those with high power have the right to dispense authority, while on the other hand, for low Power Distance, people stress on equality of opportunity and rights, they are independent and do not rely on each other much. These can be implied that elders in high PDI play importance roles in buying behaviour. Moreover, Albers-Miller (1996) had stated in her study that four appeals of advertising including ornamental (which refer to beautiful, decorative, ornate, adorned, embellished,…

Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming)…

The scientific method is a procedure that is used by scientists now and in the past, dating back to the seventeenth century. The scientific method consists of observation, measurement, and experiment, and the creation and testing of hypotheses. There are countless different reasons as to why a scientist would use the scientific method, but one area of research that is focused on is, biology. Biologists seek to find the answers to further and better understand the processes that occur in living systems.…
