Consulting with a Mental Health Provider
Collaborator and Systems In efforts to provide consultation in my field of work, I approached a mental health consultant at Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC). Her name is Rachel Sullo, LICSW and she has been working for MSPCC for 3 years in a variety of different capacities. Right now she is transitioning from mental health consultation to working as an in-home therapy supervisor at MSPCC. As a mental health consultant Rachel serves kids ranging from birth to 14 years of age. The goal of the mental health consultation program is to provide support to early education providers in developing and strengthening their

Rachel explained that the CSEFEL used in her program looks at 5 different factors in promoting social emotional competence in infants and young children. The 5 factors focus on the promotion, prevention, and interventions. The first is to have an effective workforce or systems that help promote and keep the use of evidence based practices. Then they look at nurturing and responsive relationships to create a safe environment in the development of children. We then move to high quality supportive environments which is evidenced by supportive and responsive relationship between adults to promote heathy development. The fourth factor is targeted social and emotional support which addresses how the system helps in teaching social skills and how it can have a preventative effect. The last factor to consider are intensive interventions which are assessment based intervention such as individualized behavior support plans. All of these factors try to provide a framework to provide room for comprehensive interventions and …show more content…
In efforts to organize this concerns I planned to use collaborative helping maps as described in Collaborative Helping by Madsen (2014). In the implementation of the collaborative map I intend to help organize the consultation and provide structure to best address the complex issues Rachel was describing. This first session, while helpful in understanding what Rachel does and what are some of the major concerns, it seemed to be a bit problem saturated. In efforts to create a more a strength based consultation, a collaborative map will give direction and will help us focus on the possibilities rather than all of the issues at hand. In addressing the issues as obstacles, it might provide opportunity to move the consultation in a more positive direction. I took some time to explain to Rachel that I was going to be using a collaborative helping map to help with the consultation process. She thought it was a good idea as to how to move forward with the

My findings may help reduce teaching practitioners’ stress and anxiety. As an insider, on various occasions, I have noticed that a number of pupils suffer socially and emotionally and seek help. As a consequence, teaching practitioners spend a lot of time dealing with different behavioural issues and try to provide an inclusive place for learning. Taking this point further, it will be very useful to study social and emotional behaviour, which would then allow me to support pupils thereby improving school behaviour as a whole, reducing the level of risky behaviour thus creating a happy atmosphere for effective learning. I discussed my research project with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who recommended that this particular area is worth exploring and suggested ideas to improve behaviour of children’s with…

Extensive evidence-based research shows that a parent’s capabilities and innate response to the demands of their role significantly affects children’s emotional and behavioural adjustment (Mowder, 2005; Eshel et al., 2006). Typically, children thrive when their parents take action to provide a loving and sensitive relationship along with a stimulating and nurturing environment (Scott, 1998; Scott, 2010). Longitudinal studies attest that a secure parent-child relationship coupled with firm, clear boundaries and positive role-modelling generates emotional resilience and healthy adjustments in children and is associated with a reduced risk of SEBD (Skolnick and Skolnick, 2005; Thomson et al., 2014). In contrast, epidemiological studies confirm that risk factors such as poor parenting can have a pervasive influence on the development of children’s socio-emotional well-being (Robins and Rutter, 1990; Rossi and Rossi, 1990; Robins, 1991; Cummings and Davies, 1994; Sanders, 1999). Specifically, a lack of positive interaction between parent and child, insecure attachments, poor knowledge and awareness of child development, stern or inconsistent behaviour management skills and insufficient engagement with children can increase the risk of maladjusted behaviours (Baumrind, 1991; Sanders, 1999; O’Connor and Scott, 2007).…

Empathy could be the most important attribute a teacher can have when advocating for social development in a classroom full of students. In order for children to feel safe and secure in a space other than home, they need to feel that someone cares for them and is attentive to their needs. Teachers need to have the ability to tailor instruction to meet all skill levels and this can build a trusting relationship between student and teacher. This essay will describe the stages of social development, the teacher’s role in social development and list a few ideas of how to promote positive sense of self in the classroom. There are eight stages of social development, according to the psychosocial development expert, Erik Erikson.…
