Consultation and supervision are two words with different meanings in both the realm of nursing and everyday use. First, consultation in reference to Advance Practice Nursing explains the direct contact and discussion of patient care between an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and an expert or specialist on the question of care. Hamric, Hanson, Tracey and O’ Grady define consultation as the act of developing professional relationships and using expert opinions to produce positive patient outcomes (2014.) For example, in an acute care setting a nurse practitioner may have a patient with a condition that requires an opinion from a person more experienced in the area of question but of the same educational level. The consult would consist of collaboration with a colleague or peer in nursing and determining the best possible solution for a patient’s situation. With each patient entering the department seeking care for mental health conditions like, acute psychosis or suicidal ideations, a medical screening is performed by the healthcare provider like the nurse practitioner. After the patient is medically cleared, a psychiatric consult is ordered for the patient. In this setting, an APRN, nurse practitioner trained in mental health assesses the patient and determines the need for in-patient admission or out-patient care.
