Dr. Bic’s Lab Dr. Zuzana Bic is a public health instructor at UC Irvine. She received her medical degree at King Charles University Medical School in Prague, Czech Republic in 1980 and her Doctorate in Public Health at Loma Linda University in 1997 with a specialty in preventive care and lifestyle medicine (“Zuzana Bic”). Consuelo Siposs is a supervisor who manages education at the American Diabetes Association Office in Irvine, targeting underserved minority populations throughout Orange County, primarily those who are most susceptible to type 2 diabetes (“Poor? You’re more likely to lose a limb to diabetes, study shows.”). Passport to Health is a type 2 diabetes management and prevention …show more content…
Just as the way platelet aggregation causes migraines, its opposite effect, preventing platelet clumping, has been demonstrated to have a healing value for mitigating headaches (Bic et al., 1999). High fat diets may be the first stage to causing platelet aggregation thus prompting migraines (Bic et al., 1999). The main objective of this study was to assess the levels of lipid intake in a diet and observe a correlation, if any, between a low fat diet intake and the severity of migraines. This study was aimed to decrease dietary fat intake in subjects suffering from migraines to see if it will decrease the severity and prevalence of their migraines. The investigators recruited 54 subjects (12 male, 42 female) between the ages of 24-71, with a median age of 41 (Bic et al., 1999). In order to qualify for this study, subjects had to have been diagnosed with migraines for at least a year, and have to be suffering from headaches at least once a month (Bic et al., 1999). Diabetics and smokers were excluded from the study to prevent other possible variables from being introduced (Bic et al., 1999). There were three …show more content…
As briefly touched upon from Dr. Bic’s publications, diabetes (insulin resistance) has been shown to be a potential precursor of migraines. Raising awareness for type 2 diabetes and gaining funders for the ADA’s Passport to Health can aid in diabetes research, advocacy, and education; the main goals of the ADA. Educating the general public about type 2 diabetes (especially those most vulnerable to the disease: minorities), its consequences, and ways to prevent it can help decrease the epidemic of diabetes in America. As of now, my partner and I have completed our Passport to Health Presentation, but because we have been having a difficult time contacting our assigned funders, we have not been able to present and addressed this problem to Allison, Consuelo, and Dr. Bic. My partner and I have switched between multiple organizations, starting off with Weingart, then switching to Ingram Micro, and lastly Hoag. However, we have not been able to successfully schedule an appointment with which we may be able to present our short ten-minute presentation about the ADA’s Passport to Health. However, the project for the class is essentially complete; the only difficulty was contacting our organizations to present to them. As previously stated, Allison has instructed us to simply send the PowerPoint to Consuelo and they will discuss Passport to Health over with Dr.
