Our history has become like a game of telephone, people pick and choose key facts when discussing controversial topics without looking at all the facts. The United States Constitution created a representative democracy that has last for 200 years. However, that does not mean 18th century logic should rule over the 21st century. The Second Amendment was written in 1791, when the country’s government was still forming, the revolutionary war was just fought, people still had to hunt for their food, Indian wars still raged, and attacks from wild animals were still imminent. There were many reason why the founding fathers thought, at that time, the Right to Bear Arms was a constitutional right. But a lot has changed since the 18th century and today the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution should not guarantee every citizen the right to carry a handgun without a permit.

The United States Constitution was written more than 200 years, while it was well written it does have some flaws. The Constitution did allow for slavery, did not allow women to vote, and only counted you as a person if you were a white male land owner. The constitution did and does have some flaws, but they were repealed. The Second Amendment is outdated and was from a political response to the security situation two centuries ago. Guns today need to be more heavily regulated, guns laws need to be smarter and safer, and guns need to be harder to obtain. If someone want to obtain a gun, they must be made to go through a whole licensing process, including a thorough criminal and background check. There should testing and training requirements to guarantee gun owner know and understand gun laws and how to safely handles and store guns. Hopefully in time if laws and regulation like this were in place, we could create a gun violence free
