Constellations In The Night Sky Lab Report

The goals of this lab are to observe the constellations in the night sky. We are to us the internet or any other resources of our choice to research the history of the constellations. I decided to do research over Libra, which means the Scales or Balance. It is also one of my favorite constellations because it is also my zodiac sign. Libra has three really bright stars and they are Alpha Librae, Beta Librae, and Gamma Librae. The three stars can be seen at the upper part of the scales that links the two balance beams. After conducting research, I found this constellation to be a symbol that stood for equality and it represented Justice in various Middle eastern countries. The Greeks had a different view of Libra. They believed that the …show more content…
Hydra is the largest of the 88 constellations and lies in the southern hemisphere. Hydra’s head is located at the bottom of the constellation Cancer and its tail lies between Centaurus and Libra (which is the constellation stated above). Hydra’s story concerns Heracles like several other constellations. After Heracles, killed Nemean Lion he set out to find the Hydra. Athene helped Heracles find this outrageous seven headed monster. They fight each other and soon Heracles puts the monster to his death. Heracles became the subservient to Eurystheus. This constellation is best seen in March and April. It has tons of major stars including; Alpha Hydrae, Gamma Hydrae, Zeta Hydrae, etc. Hydra has a few sky objects entwined within it, which gives it such its magical meaning. It is one amazing creation! I have researched the constellations Libra and Hydra and they both play an important role in the night sky; just like all the others. Both of them have amazing facts that I never knew about them and once I began doing my research over them I found mind blowing facts and myths. It was amazing to me how people from our past made up these stories about each little group of stars in the

Eighteenth and 19th century technologies transformed the way in which the night sky was observed and led to the discovery of celestial wonders, from stars, galaxies, meteors, moons, planets, comets to nebula. The result was, in part, the creation of celestial maps that showed an exponential number of stars in the heavens, adding to the awe of a sphere that is millions of miles away and beautiful beyond compare. Star atlases became a way of conveying information about the heavens, and Elijah H. Burritt's, "The Geography of the Heavens, 1856 (Cover-title: Atlas designed to illustrate Burritt's Geography of the Heavens), edited by Hiram Mattison and first published in 1833, is a 6-chart atlas that illustrates the mapping of the stars and features the constellations prominently and in great detail. There were several editions after and thousands of copies in print sold over a generation to meet the demand for this popular book.…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

My favorite constellation is the Cetus or 'whale' because I think it looks more like a frying pan than a whale. The Cetus is a constellation made up of 88 stars and the brightest star is called Deneb Kaitos. The Cetus is very close to the other zodiac constellations such as Aries, Pisces and Aquarius. The creation story of the Cetus constellation stems from Greek mythology. In this story the Cetus is called a Sea Monster and not a whale.…
