There is a bronze sculpture that sits inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art Like several other pieces inside the museum, it rests atop an extravagant block of limestone, guarded by trained personnel, under the watch of state of the art cameras. This bronze sculpture depicts a woman’s round bosom with her head vainly looking off to the side admiring her beauty. As beautiful as this simplistic sculpture may be, for several years it was the center of art critique for its strong resemblance to a male sexual organ. The famous artist behind this piece (among several others) is none other than Constantin Brancusi. The sculpture by Brancusi is an artistic rendition of French princess and sex analyst Marie Bonaparte, it is said that French princess Marie Bonaparte was so obsessed with the female orgasm that she spent years studying the sexual climax in females. Growing up close to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, Brancusi had developed a niche for wood carved objects. His talents awarded him the opportunity of attending the Craiova School of Arts and Crafts in Romania. It is said that at the age of 18 Brancusi was able to create a violin using only the materials around him. He had also built his own phonograph, furniture and utensils. Over time, Brancusi’s art work would lead him to Paris where he we would learn and create art with Antonin Mercie and August Rodin. There he met the artists Romolo Romani and Gaetano Previati who introduced him to somewhat a different world. Boccioni was a painter for much of his short career. While on one of his trips to Paris, he was apprehended with the idea of infusing sculpture with the modernity of Futurism. In 1912 he published his Futurist Painting Sculpture: Plastic Dynamism (Pittura scultura Futuriste: Dinamismo Plastico), and then the next year (1913) he revealed his masterpiece Unique Forms of Continuity in Space.…

The sculpture I’ve picked depicts a woman swimming (debatable) as she holds an ibex or gazelle shaped dish, and it is almost as long as a hairbrush. It nests in a glass case with other pieces of the ibex motif just a few turns away from the Hatshepsut statuary room. The purpose of this essay is to detail the statuette’s properties, hopefully finding how the properties display specific qualities of Egypt in its eighteenth dynasty. I chose this item because I couldn’t help but make the connection of the item’s cosmetive purpose and ancient Egyptian’s frequent use of makeup, particularly kohl, which they rimmed around their eyes to protect them from the brutal sun’s glare. It is made of alabaster and greywacke, and the ankles and feet of the…

The Peplos Kore and Anita Huffington’s Kore are two established works of art that possess the delicate nature of humanity. The differences between the Peplos Kore and Anita Huffington’s Kore can likely be attributed to the magnitude of elapsed time between their creations; however, their similarities stem from the similar depictions of the female body. The Peplos Kore was sculpted during the Archaic period in 530 BCE., just before the Classical period, whereas Anita Huffington’s Kore is a contemporary work of art crafted in 1991. Despite very dissimilar goals, both artists were able to portray the tranquility of the female body’s physical and emotional elements. Seen as one of the of the most exceptional figures from the Archaic period, The Peplos Kore from Acropolis, Athens comes into the picture.…

The image chosen for this essay is “Him” by Maurizio Cattelan. There are two images that shows the sculpture’s back and front. On the other hand, the other image depicting the placement of the sculpture portrays the actual meaning behind the creation of the sculpture. Typically, an individual will initially approach that sculpture thinking it is a innocent boy kneeling down, possibly praying or asking for forgiveness. This is expressed by the boy’s posture and arching of the back.…

The treatment of sexuality is commonly used as a source of pleasure for the viewer when portraying the idealized woman. Women are constantly used in art for pleasure and the goddess of love, Venus, is frequently used as the perfect woman to gaze upon. Titian met the viewers’ attention when using Venus in his piece Venus of Urbino, 1538. However, another art painting attracted more attention when depicting a nude woman in a similar style of Venus, Olympia, 1863, by Edouard Manet. Manet’s use of a nude woman is considered blasphemy due to comparing a low class woman to a goddess.…

The painting I chose to do an analysis on is “Kneeling Mother with a Child at Her Breast”. In the painting I see a African women with dark skin kneeling down on both knees holding her baby in her left arm with one hand behind head and the other on the buttocks. She is kneeling on a round grey mat while the baby is sucking on her nipple. She is also starring in her baby’s eyes with somewhat of a grin on her face. Both her and her baby are butt naked in this painting.…

“Puberty” is created during the 1890’s when Munch was beginning to find himself in the art world. This painting is a representation of his sexual repression and tension. It portrays a young, nude girl, sitting with her legs together in a shy pose. It is also a representation of the girl’s awareness of her changing body, as well as an indication of her sexual desire that she cannot or is afraid to show. Theories say that Munch has represented himself as the girl in the painting and that he illustrated his own undeveloped sexual desires in the form of a girl.…
