I believe the first thing you need to do when considering the legitimacy of a source is to fact check, fact check, and fact check again. Once again, we have an enormous amount of information at the stroke of a keyboard and we should consider a number of things- Who is the author? Are they known to be a credible resource? Generally they are analyzed by experts in the field that they represent and typically not published until it has been perceived as content that should be made available to the public. Often times the journals can be a little overwhelming to the common lay person but if you read the abstract you get a pretty good idea of the information included in the article and/or journal. Websites, magazine articles, and other published sources oftentimes don't have experts vetting the information so it's up to the person reading the material to question the validity. This can be extremely overwhelming at times. Is drinking a glass of red wine everyday good for me? Or is it dreadful? Personally I have run into this in the past within my small circle of friends, hence the name "conspiracy theorist." Often times people tend to believe most of what is on the news, in print, etc. but in my opinion, it's our job to question that
