According, to Thorstein Vebeln conspicuous consumption is buying expensive items to display wealth and earnings to impress others. For Veblen having wealth is not enough it must be displayed. You can benefit from showing others your wealthy and you have the money; you are considered apart of the leisure class. It gives access into social circles and more resources. Additionally, you have more time on your hands, you don’t have to work, there’s more time for leisure. It is important to look wealthy even if we are not. Conspicuous consumption is relevant in today’s society a lot of people are being wasteful and buying things that they don’t really need just for status. We are so occupied with imitating the lifestyle of the elite. We buy things to feed that specific image to society. We have accepted and allow ourselves to believe that our worth and value is defined by how much we have and how much can buy.

Civilization is harmful to our happiness and it suffocates our sexual urges that lead to pleasure. Our personal happiness is often ignored due to social unity. To be civilized we must abstain from our strongest instincts violence and sex. However, in today’s society we find other outlets to sex and violence but these activities do not fulfill our instinct fulfillment. Civilization requires humans to sacrifice their sexuality and destructive habits. For this reason, humans have a hard time feeling happy. Human beings and civilization remain unsatisfied we have created the destructive powers we now
