Family Assessment of Shelby Eatenton Latcherie Family does not have a universal definition, and over the years the definition has changed from a traditional mother, father, and children to several variations. Examples of these are parents that are unmarried, are of the same sex and those that do not live in the same household but do what is called co-parenting. The definition of family according to Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson (2015) is "Family refers to two or more individuals who depend on one another for emotional, physical, and economic support. The members of the family are self defined" (p. 5). The movie, Steel Magnolias, is based on a true story but names, details and events have been changed.…
If Florence Could See Us Now The field of nursing has changed significantly over the years to include a holistic approach in patient care. This discussion board is about explaining one theory that would best fit the majority population who are experiencing or are at risk for a health problem. Educational and community-based programs in Healthy People 2020 are aimed towards preventing disease and injury, improving health, and enhancing quality of life (Educational and community-based programs, 2016). One learning theory that would best fit the population for a diabetic patient is Social Learning Theory. This theory strives to explain behavior and help people learn about their diagnosis. There are four main sources that influence learning personal mastery, vicarious experience, persuasion and physiological feedback (Nies & McEwen, 2015).…
Implementing my person philosophy takes diligence because I am understanding that the environment contributes to the healing process. One way a nurse can improve the environment is by ensuring a clean and safe that is welcoming. To aid with the patients stay managing my time management is crucial to providing efficient and effective care. Thus, when it comes to boundaries as a professional I realize there is a fine line to walk with caring for patients. This course has provided me a different perspective on the nursing practice.…
One strategy that could be used to promote the theory of caring, could be when a nursing leader takes on using the theory themselves. According to Beck, Jakobsson and Edberg (2014), when a nursing leader understands and implements the theory of caring first, then nursing staff will start to follow them. The study done by Lamke, Catlin, and Mason-Chadd, (2014) stated, if a leader provided tools to increase the nurses personal wellbeing then the patients that they cared for resulted in a health increase in return. This study was preformed over a four-month period, in which training of how to increase self-care was included. The things reviewed that in this study were the following positive areas: positive outlook, gratefulness, motivation, calmness,…
In Covey quote I feel it relates to health education and/or healthcare because we can view certain clients/patients in a certain point of view that relates to our experiences. For example if an overweight client comes in to reduce their body weight and improve their health it may be easy for us to say stop eating so much and do exercise because that formula maybe our lens that we use to achieve weight loss. But we should also take into account family dynamics such as poor eating habits through generations of our clients; are there joint issues that limits there exercise capabilities and mobility? We have to take into account there motivation and how we can influence change with our clients health by helping our client maintain and improve their…
Through the provided case scenario, there are a few key concepts that stand out in relation to overall health (pathophysiological, psychological, and psychosocial). These key concepts include: Mr. R a male, 58 years of age, colon cancer diagnosis, traumatic surgery, and results of a temporary colostomy. We as nurses need to see the relations between these key aspects, and life events. Not only has the pathophysiological aspects of cancer in the colon (which leaves an increased risk of future cancers) and the surgery to correct the cancer, he also has psychological and psychosocial problems associated with the scenario. Sometimes healthcare professions may overlook the other two aspects and primary focus on the physical aspects.…
Furthermore, while in prison convicts make millions of license plates, each year, and countless of other things that civilians outside the prison walls aren’t aware of according to an article by (Lucas Reilly 2013), such as; “Books for the Blind, Lingerie, Park Benches And Picnic Tables, Military Jackets and Battle Garb, Human Silhouette Targets, Old IKEA Products, Baseball Caps, Canoes, and Blue Jeans,” Evidently, this explains why there are more prisons opening up and police are arresting minorities for petty crimes, in order to fill them up. According to (Nathalie Baptiste 2016) article, she states that the nation’s over-incarceration problem dates to the “Tough on Crime” policies of the 1980's, which imposed mandatory minimum sentences on often low level…
Ever since I was a young child I have witnessed the care of which various members of my family having care provided for them by nurses. At the age of 8 I had a grandfather who was dying with cancer, and so every Saturday when I would visit I would witness my grandfather receiving care from nurses within the home, and just seeing how this improved his life within the home even in his suffering he was able to smile. The personal attributes which I have gained from this experience of having siblings being ill on a routinely basis are various. For example; being patient, having resilience and being attuned to the needs of my family members and their health problems have provided me an insight to the world of care provided by nurses and the difficulties that they overcame with my family.…
My Goals and Walden University Mission Introduction After surviving nursing school to obtain my nursing degree, going back to school had taken a back seat on my list of goals. However, after working in the nursing field for the past two years, I have realized the importance and benefits of an advanced degree. My goal of attending graduate school is to prepare a career as a Nurse Administrator. While looking for a school to obtain my MSN, a co-worker informed me about Walden University.…
At my clinical fieldwork site, Christiana Hospital located 45 minutes south of the Usciences campus, I have been placed in the acute care, stroke rehabilitation floor with a clinical instructor (CI) who has over 25 years of experience. Thus far it has been a great experience and I feel like my CI is learning along with me as we discuss our patients throughout the day. She is very receptive to my input and understands the importance of staying up to date on current occupational therapy topics. That is one reason why she takes on at least two Level I students, and one level II student each year. One topic I tend to mention often is the social support available to the patients we see and how that impacts her clinical reasoning for referring the…
As a nursing student, I feel it is important to familiarize myself with various nursing literature to enhance my knowledge on nursing practice and to shape the type of nurse I want to become. The way I want to structure my future career is centered around the concept of empathy, which is what I will be discussing in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to become aware of my views, attitudes, and how my experiences will affect my nursing practice. I will first examine how an effective therapeutic nurse-client relationship can be developed from the use of empathy and how the patient is positively affected by this skill.…
In the movie of The Conjuring, it foreshadows a witch which is considered as a dark presence. In the movie, there is a new family of seven, five daughters and their pet dog that moves into an unfrequented farmhouse which took place in the '70s. Strange things have been happening to the house as well to the family, they call investigators to look at the house to find out why weird things have been happening. The reason for the dark presence, appearance in the house is because someone had died at the house so unfortunately the house is haunted without the new family members being aware of it. The writers of the Conjuring believe that a dark presence in a home can harm and destroy an innocent family.…
In nursing, a leader 's role involves leading and influencing shared values, visions and expectations to enhance their organization 's goals (Giltinane, 2013). Leaders can enhance effective performance from others but they can also allow a person to grow, change and become successful in any responsibility. In order to grasp a better understanding of leadership, I will be examining some habits from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. I will be discussing how some of these habits can be applied into the nursing practice, how I will apply the habits in nursing and my personal growths in regards to the seven habits.…
As a future nurse educator I look forward to teaching college students. I picture myself teaching students the basics of nursing. I hope that I have a good mentor as I enter this field. I noticed this theme in my reading and feel that this would be a plus to my learning how to approach the students. I also feel that I am wise enough to realize that I am one who knows that she does not know it all, I am willing to help a student know where to find it.…
