Conservation Officer Protecting nature, catching criminals, and enjoying the great outdoors, there's nothing like the daily life of a conservation officer. In the criminal filled world of the outdoors we need someone to protect and keep it safe. Who could this be you may ask? The answer is conservation officers. Officers enforce fish and game laws and work to help and protect nature. The great outdoors is a wonderful place, but the truth is there are some bad people out there. Often hunters will poach illegal animals or fisherman will catch and keep over the legal limit. When this happens someone needs to take action. Those people are conservation officers, officers work for the U.S. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or state bureaus. They enforce laws related to hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. A conservation officer does not come without training, it requires years of school and classes. The position was created in the late nineteenth century. Originally, they were known as "game protectors". The first game protectors recorded comprised a group of eight men authorized to arrest anyone who killed wildlife on protected land. Their job was to protect game and catch poachers. They also chose to protect streams from pollution. In 1960, their name was changed to "conservation officers", then in 1970, they were renamed "environmental conservation officers", after the Conservation Department and the State Health Department merged to become the "Department of Environmental Conservation".
