Persuasion and Women
An example of a social environment where persuasion often works on women and creates a detrimental result is intimate partner violence. Partners who are caught up in the cycle of violence are often persuaded by their partners to stay in an unhealthy relationship. The batterers tend to use a technique similar to the “foot in the door” technique where they get the victim to agree on a small offer and then gradually push their luck. This cycle is called the cycle of violence and it is full of coercion and persuasion and happens repetitively for victims of intimate partner violence. A study on coercion and intimate partner violence states, “the consequences of coercive control include the range of mental health (e.g., posttraumatic

The Power and Control Wheel provides eight different behavioral categories that an abusive partner uses in order to keep all the power and control in the relationship (Robinson, 2013). To a person that has not experienced this type of relationship violence, these behavioral categories may be clear signs of abuse and need of help. However, these categories can often be unrecognizable and/or normal to a person experiencing them (Robinson, 2013). In Sipe’s (2013) book, “I am Not Your Victim”, each tactic is seen within Beth and Sam’s relationship. Beginning with the category of economic abuse, this tactic gives the abuser the control over the victim’s freedom and ability to support themselves (Robinson, 2013).…

Ellen Pence is best known for her advocacy and batterer programming with the Duluth program on behalf of women’s experience with abuse (Gondolf, 2010). Ellen’s activism all started with a generic community organizing training that opened all the possibilities that contributed to social change (Dasgupta, 2010). From there, Ellen began to work in anti-domestic violence and that’s where she and her colleagues developed the Duluth model (Dasgupta, 2010). The basis of Ellen’s advocacy in anti-domestic violence was to increase the awareness of gender oppression (Gondolf, 2010). In the culture of domestic violence, gender oppression has been nearly taken over by the notion of victimization.…

Introduction The definition of intimate partner violence, which is commonly referred to as domestic violence, can be psychological aggression, physical violence, forced acts, or sexual by an intimate partner from the present or the past (Wilson, Graham, & Taft, 2014). During the 1960s, law enforcement officers and judges viewed intimate partner violence as an insignificant crime and cases would never make it to the court rooms (Clark, 2011). This type of aggression was seemingly a common practice among many households across the nation and was viewed as a tool that men utilized often in an attempt to correct their partners. On many occasions, officials would just tell men to calm down and tell the women who were being victimized to not provoke…

The necessity of marriage and finding a partner at a certain point in life is so deeply embedded in society. The tale of meeting “Prince Charming” and having him sweep you off your feet is something most young girls believe in and unconsciously pursue. For men, the idea of marriage is not so charming. It is seen in literature throughout time that men believe that to be married is to be “tied down”, that women are only trying to manipulate and “trap them” and in this way are never constant in their character. It is this falsified inconstancy of women that is portrayed in pieces like Walter Map’s Letter from Valerius to Ruffinus and in Persuasion by Jane Austen.…
