Everyone has experienced someone else judging him or her to a certain degree, and the diverse groups of students that I am working with at my field placement are certainly no exception. Luckily, the school culture promotes individuality and being who you want to be, but unfortunately being different isn’t promoted everywhere. Discriminating based off of how someone looks is more common than not, and my students are beginning to realize this as they begin to form their own opinions about current issues in society. This Thematic Unit has carefully and thoughtfully integrated students’ lives, and placed their lived experiences at the heart of this unit. Students will be required to reflect upon their own experiences growing up, and how these experiences…

Again my idea of what indirect discrimination would be that someone is discriminating against a fellow person but are doing it underhandedly. But from secondary research I learn’t that indirect-discrimination is when you have things such as a condition, rule, policy or a practice within your organisation that applies to everyone but explicitly disadvantages people whom share a specific characteristic. An example of indirect-discrimination would be if that a job was to request that employees wear jeans and a T-shirt, effectively becoming a disadvantage for certain people that follow a religion that has a strict dress policy.…

Children tend to copy and imitate people they look up to, so when working with children, adults need to act professionally and portray an image that is non-judgmental. Adults need to show respect to all individuals regardless of their culture, religion, ethnicity or disability.…

Since no counterargument was presented, in my opinion, one objection my peer could take into consideration is that although there are policies put in place such as Affirmative action which has committees and laws that are formed to protect and provide equal opportunities to minoritis some may argue that because these programs are focused on socioeconomic factors instead of on individual merit, they are inherently unfair because they are disadvantageous to the majority population. This is sometimes referred to as reverse discrimination. My peer's argument can try to prove that although programs such as affirmation action are based on good intentions for bettering the life of minorities. The discrimination is the exclusion of the majority population.…

Keith Jones, another individual with disabilities would go on to share a very interesting viewpoint of the education system. As an African-American, Keith described many of the unique situations he went through in his life related to his disability. This brought to light another issue where individuals with disabilities are often discriminated against by not only their disability, but also through other areas easily targeted by prejudice. Keith’s story did indeed raise another even deeper question for the audience, how do we provide an equal and positive educational experience for those with disabilities while also keeping in mind many of the already present prejudices within the world we live in? Is there a way we can help dispel many of these already horrific prejudices while also providing the best educational experience for everyone?…
