How would it feel to lose a best friend? The novel Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper is a realistic heart-breaking story that takes place in a typical late 1990s high school environment. Four best friends, who play basketball, were out driving under the influence one night after a victory for the team. That night those friends suffered a dramatic loss of a best friend named Robert due to a car crash. Through her use of characters and setting, Draper examines the theme of consequences. She clearly shows that every action is followed by consequences.
Andy, BJ, and Tyrone all lost a best friend that night. They all coped in their own way, except Andy. Both Tyrone and BJ found ways to help them through the tough time. BJ found Christ, “I know people will say that it’s because of the accident that I came back to church-well, they’re right. Some people are excepting of Andy’s decision and some were not. Andy’s little brother, Monty was the only one who noticed and understood his suffering. “But I'll always love you, and I'll always miss you and I'll never forget that It's okay to put dragons in the jungle and tears on a tiger” (162) Is what Monty said as he was remembering his brother.
