In this week’s phonation laboratory activity, each student was able to express their individual voice qualities. While modal voicing was relatively easy for all five subjects, some found themselves struggling to match the pulse and falsetto pitch. However, all participants in the individual study were females, did not smoke, and none of them had a voice disorder. Any of those factors could have significantly affected the results. Eventually, each subject was able to match the correct pitch and have their results recorded.…

Based on this diagnosis, a treatment plan has been established in order to assist J.A. with her speech. The focus of therapy would be to increase her intelligibility and focus primarily on limiting the frequency of phonological processes and increasing the functionally of her speech. The Cycles approach will be implemented to provide systematic correction of several phonemes simultaneously. This approach will also positively affect J.A. intelligibility more quickly given the multiple errors that she produces. The Cycles approach incorporates perceptual training through auditory bombardment, coloring activities and verbal production.…

“Speak up, we can’t hear you” “why don’t you talk more?” “Women talk too much”, these sentences are often heard by women throughout their lives, and women seem to never be able to catch a break with communication. In addition to women speaking too quietly, not speaking enough, or speaking too much, women are also judged on how their voices sound. I’m sure everyone has heard another say, “her voice is too high pitched to take seriously” or “she talks so loud and stern, she’s probably a …..”. Vocal Pedagogical Experiment I have often questioned is it possible to teach someone to have relative pitch. To test this possibility I carried out a vocal pedagogical experiment to investigate pitch-testing methods used by Sean Hutchins to examine whether relative pitch can be improved over time by putting Hutchins pedagogy to the test. Interview One Hypothesis My hypothesis is that I believe it is possible to improve one’s pitch by using correct exercises, which help improve the student’s cognitive sensory skills. I will test my hypothesis by conducting an experiment using the novel method to investigate the relationship between the ability to perceive and vocal imitate pitches used by Hutchins and Peretz (2012).…

Community, acceptance, pride and early linguistic intervention are the key issues that I found during my reading of Deaf Again. Our author’s experiences at Gallaudet University and the PSD finally gave him the feeling of existing and community. For the first time, he craved challenges and joined organizations because he did not feel left out. Drolsbaugh has now learned how to live life and was a big advocate of deaf children having every opportunity to interact with others like themselves. Without this exposure, Mark Drolsbaugh felt emotionally and cognitively much younger than his chronological age as compared to his hearing counterparts.…

Research has shown that MCT improves vocal quality immediately after treatment and in the short- term, with individuals with MTD. Improvements in vocal quality include: jitter, shimmer, signal to noise ratio, and reduced intensity (Mathieson et al., 2009; Reimann et al., 2016; Roy & Leeper, 1993; Roy et al., 1997; Van Lierde et al., 2004; Van Lierde et al., 2008). Reimann and colleagues (2016), did conclude that MCT does increase roughness in vocal quality due to muscle rebalance in the laryngeal area after MCT; however, participants did demonstrate a softer voice which is a goal of MCT. Another benefit from this treatment approach is that it is one of the most direct treatment approach to improve individuals’ voices, which increases client motivation (Van Houtee et al., 2009).…
