In recent years, children’s opportunities for free play have moderated. Some people think that the main factors influencing a child’s development these days are things such as television, friends, and music. Others believe that the family still remains more important. However, it is family who has the most important impact. There are lots of reasons for these changes but the effect, over the decades, has been a continuous and ultimately dramatic decline in children’s opportunities to play in their own chosen way.
