Cons Of Gene Therapy

Gene therapy is a very risky process. The risks can sometimes out way the pros. Some people are really sick and need to have these things done to increase their quality of life. Why wouldn’t you want to increase your quality of life? At the same time, some people are using gene therapy to make physical changes to themselves. For example, making themselves stronger or smarter. Do you really think you’re going to spontaneously know more by getting a gene that makes you smarter.

According to Genetics home reference, “Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease.” This makes perfect sense why you would do it, if you have a disease. Why would you do this and take time from the doctor who can be saving someone's

My first question, how can they do it? According to Kids Health, there are two different types of gene therapy. The first type is somatic gene therapy. Kids Health says, “(Somatic gene therapy)Involves introducing a ‘good’ gene into targeted cells to treat the patient — but not the patient's future children because these genes do not get passed along to offspring. In other words, even though some of the patient's genes may be altered to treat a disease, it won't change the chance that the disease will be passed on to the patient's children. This is the more common form of gene therapy being done.” (Gene Therapy and Kids.) This type involves attaching the gene to a virus called a vector. The other type is germline. Kids Health says, “(Germline gene therapy)Involves modifying the genes in egg or sperm cells, which will then pass any genetic changes to future generations. Experimenting with this type of therapy, scientists injected fragments of DNA into fertilized mouse eggs. The mice grew into adults and their offspring had the new gene. Scientists found that certain growth and fertility problems could be corrected with this therapy, which led them to think that the same could be true for humans. Although it has potential for preventing inherited disease, germline gene therapy is controversial and very little research is being done, for technical and ethical reasons.” (Gene Therapy and Kids.)This is the less common type of gene …show more content…
They want to make themselves smarter, stronger, etc. Why can’t people just like themselves the way they are? I feel that changing that kind of stuff is messing with the way you were created. Combining the thousands of dollars it costs and the risks, it's not worth it. I read a quote by an unknown author that said “You were given this life because you were strong enough to live it.” (May I Find Peace in This Uncertain World) That kind of gene therapy goes against everything the quote was saying. That makes your life easier than what you were given. You were put in a situation not because someone wants you to fail but they want you to succeed.

In conclusion, gene therapy could be a very positive thing. Yet again, people being people had to find a way to turn something good into a selfish act to help themselves instead of helping those who could use it for good. I agree with most of the aspects of gene therapy but not the ones that don’t have to do with genetic disorders. There are many risks that scientists are trying to reduce. I think that one day gene therapy will be a great option for those with genetic disorders. Now all that you and I have to do is

There are 2 types of gene therapy they are “Germline therapy and Somatic therapy”. Germline therapy is a treatment that involves the adjustment of the genes inside the germ cells (ova or sperm). As zygote evolves, they would divide which, will then passed on the adjusted gene into different cells. While the Somatic therapy is the insertion of therapeutic…

However, there is a major moral obligation to treat any patient with the best available treatment, and everyone agrees with this moral obligation. The correction of the genetic defect occurs in the germ cells, and the produced offspring could be affected by the disorder and the additional gene therapy would be required to correct the therapy. There is also possibility to modify height, streghth, intelligence or memory which could greatly interfere with the normal variability on the basis of evolution. It is also extremely difficult to control gene therapy in medical practice if adopted and practiced (Giacca,…

Genetic engineering used to be the thing the scientists experimented on plants and animals but now humans. I dont think its right to change the way people live life just to either look a little better or be a little smarter. It's okay in some situations, for instance when someone has really bad pain and it is never ending. We need something to fix it that is not pain killers. Instead we should just have surgery and never feel that amount of pain again but just enough pain to the point where we don't hurt yourself without knowing it (Doc 2).…

There are however many ethical issues revolving around this topic, such as who determines which genes are ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Will gene therapy make certain traits and characteristics undesirable and thus making us more un-accepting? If we can use gene therapy to change our genes, can we use it to change our phenotype or intellectual abilities? (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/handbook/therapy/ethics) These are the types of questions many raise when talking about gene therapy and why it shouldn’t be used widespread. Medications which are also being trialled are those such as riluzole which aim to cure SMA…

C.R.I.S.P.R.-Cas9 is a technology that is used to target specific stretches of genetic code and edit DNA at precise locations. It also finds breaks in the DNA and either puts it back together with a tiny change, or puts it back together with a piece of donor DNA. It allows scientists to modify genes in living cells and organisms, and also may cure mutations in the future. I think that this technology is and isn’t a good thing to spread around the world. There is more pros to C.R.I.S.P.R.-Cas9 than there is cons.…

According to Glannon, gene therapy “is an intervention aimed at treating disease and restoring physical and mental functions and capacities to an adequate baseline.” Genetic enhancement “is an intervention aimed at improving functions and capacities that already are adequate.” (577) He believes that there are no medical or moral reasons for genetically enhancing normal human functions. Glannon observes that currently, the best example of a medically accepted form of genetic enhancement is immunization against infectious disease.…

Gattaca, is it really down to a science? “Technology makes things faster and more cost-effective, but it's not perfect. The whole concept of gene modification is frightening, since genes are what make us and if that goes wrong everything could go wrong. Just like in live-action movies, if there is an advanced concept and that ends up in the wrong hands, the end result could be corrupt or disastrous. For example, in the movie “The Amazing Spiderman” a scientist turns himself into a human lizard, where he takes a reptile’s DNA and creates a drug to regrow his missing arm. Human gene therapy, seen from an evolutionary point of view, could be very surprising and unexpected since it is not the environment, such as selective pressure, that is contributing to evolution but is the organism itself. Depending on the perspective, gene therapy does not adhere to the rules of natural selection.…
