Cons Of Driving To School

Improved Essays
Driving to school can be great. Many students starting early on in both Elementary and Middle school were driven to school by their parents. Many of us experienced the congestion at drop off and pickup times at Rincon Valley Middle school. Now, here at Maria Carrillo, the experience is quite similar. With students getting their driver's licenses left and right, they are joining the congestion.
It doesn’t really have to be this way. Let’s examine the pros and cons of driving to school. The main pros of driving are convenience and independence. It is unique to our culture to be so privileged and to take that privilege for granted. We are privileged to drive at a young age starting at 16, whereas in the European Union for example and elsewhere,

According to, Teen Drivers: Get the Facts, “In 2013, 2,163 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 243,243 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. That means that six teensagers ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries” (1). All states offer some form of driver 's education, but many families can 't afford it and/or for the cost many people don 't see the value. For instance Indiana and Karns city school district is raising prices, "It 's a really steep increase that might make it too much for some parents to afford," Bowser said.”, “The ARIN Intermediate Unit in Indiana and Karns City School District, for instance, each charge $200 per student for the six-hour training sessions.” (“Armstrong pumps up cost of driver 's ed" 1). This is an outrageous cost for drivers education. This makes drivers education fall short because many people don 't take it for cost reasons. It is imperative that new drivers get an appropriate level of practice so that they do not cause injury to themselves and others. Also, to help the safety efforts, cops are cracking down on texting while driving. This is mostly a teen problem because they are the ones that are more bound to their phones and social media. Back when I was in high school, kids that live near their house will most likely to walk to school themselves. But the reason they walk to school is not because they want to, nor it is because walking to school is faster and easier. During the senior year of high school a lot of my friends are fortunate enough to have cars bought from their parents. Ever since they got the car, I never see them walk anymore, even if the distance is short. Our home is about seven to ten minutes away from school, and, before they can drive, they always walked to school. It was not faster nor easier to drive to school since there are a lot of other cars. The only benefit from driving to school from home is to not be exposed to the cold morning weather. Once I asked my friends that why do they drive to school so much when you can just walk, some of them replied that they do not know they just want to because why not, and the others replied that they got cars now so they do not have to walk anymore. I was shocked with their replies because I thought they just do not want to walk and because it was cold in the morning, but they did not even provide me with an actual answer, it has just occurred to them that they should drive to school because driving just seems better than walking. With the technology that…

Driving yourself makes you aware of responsibilities such as filling up the gas tank before it runs out, making sure to get directions to where you are going, and leaving on time so you are not late. If driving is taken away from adolescents, they would lose that opportunity to begin learning responsibility. If teenagers have to wait until they are eighteen to be able to drive, they will remain dependent on parents practically until they ready to go off to college, join the military, or take a civilian job. At some point, teenagers have grow up and prepare for the real world. Learning to drive is one of the very first steps into adulthood, and if the driving age is raised from sixteen to eighteen, I believe that taking on all of the responsibilities of being a young adult, including driving, at once will be too much to handle. This lesson of responsibility is vital, especially in today’s…

In reality, driver education courses are being offered in only about half of the nation’s public schools, many discontinued because of skyrocketing insurance costs. Even when courses are offered, they generally focus on helping students pass a test, not teaching them to drive defensively and safely (Triplett 4). If the course is available at a school, it is only a semester long, which is not adequate time to be prepared to drive on the road. Surveys reviewed by the insurance institute show that more than fifty percent of adults support higher licensing age, and many young teens agree with this concept as well. For instance, Ryan Moore, a sixteen-year-old, stated that he thinks “it would be better to wait” (Gerdes 3). There are several solutions to choose from for a teen who needs to get a ride to work or school: carpooling with an older friend or neighbor, taking the bus or riding a bike, or having parents drop their kids…

When you turn sixteen you want to go to your friends parties, and it would be embarrassing if you show up with your parents coming to drop you off and leaving, then when the party was over it might be one in the morning on a Sunday morning then you would have to wait for your parents to show and drive you back home.…

According to Annette Bono a parent at Woodbridge High School “Parents are worried about them driving off campus, especially on a rainy day” (1). Even back in 1999 off campus lunches were starting to concern people, teens are not experienced enough drivers yet and records show that the number one cause of death for teens are car accidents. In 2008 schools in Long Island decided to close there off campus lunches because of the increasing concern of accidents and sometimes truancy. The number of car accidents actually persuaded Jeff Payne a CEO of Drivers Edge to start a driver’s Ed program in a school in Las Vega which grew into a business. Payne say to Paula Murphy, a writer for Gale “I am so frustrated that young drivers aren’t actually taught to drive. They’re just taught to pass the driving test” (1). With Campuses closing there off campus lunches they are working towards providing a more appealing lunches to kids, so that both students and stuff have a good lunch and are able to stay on campus. Although allowing students to go off campus for lunch would teach them time management, some students still wouldn’t mange there time wisely, which would make them speed or drive recklessly so that they would be able to make it back to class on time. A resolute of driving like that would most likely be an…

Millions of people are killed in vehicular accidents every year. Many of them involve texting, talking to the passenger, and other forms of multitasking while driving. However, many of them also involve one little missed detail: turning your head. In driver's education, everyone is taught to look twice, but not everyone does. Speed and perception are huge factors in why looking twice is so important. A motorcycle may not be seen at first look, but by the second it seems to have appeared out of nowhere. If you do not look, you or the person riding the motorcycle could be in critical condition. And as we all know, death is certainly another possibility.…
