Currently, there is a heavy focus on perpetually campaigning and fundraising. Georgia’s Senator, David Perdue said “Our Founding Fathers never imagined the rise of the career politician. They envisioned citizen legislators” (2016). Politicians are supposed to understand the issues that their constituents face on a daily basis and rectify them by passing legislation. Citizen legislators, in the words of Senator Perdue, would be able to “bring a fresh perspective to how burdensome government policies negatively affect people’s everyday lives” (2016). New perspectives in the legislative branch can guarantee that newly implemented laws align with our constantly changing society. Service limits will also complicate corrupt practices of some politicians, making it more difficult to build long-term relationships with lobbyists or private companies hoping to use wealth to pass legislation. Although a Constitutional amendment is needed to accomplish the task, the benefits of term limits for Congress make it worth serious consideration.
