Animal Endangerment in Brazil Brazil is home to some of the world’s most diverse wildlife, with over 2,900 animal species occupying in the Amazon rain forest. (Animals) These animals serve an important role in the world’s ecosystem, but are quickly becoming endangered. Although the extinction of animals is a natural occurrence, human activities has quicken their rate of becoming extinct. From early European colonists and settlers, to deforestation, and to animal smuggling, the number of species in the Brazilian rain forests are rapidly decreasing, but with the endangerment of animals, comes the formation of organizations that are making an effort to help conserve the rainforests where these animals live and limit the factors which are putting…
In chapter 1, the author puts off by explaining what was happening. In 1961 a civil war is being fought between UN Irish peacekeepers and the newly formed Nation of Katanga, which recently seceded from the Republic of the Congo which is located in South Africa. Congo was the third largest country on the continent of Africa. Then we are introduced to the origins of the Congo.…
The Ju/’hoansi-!Kung of the Kalahari Desert Until about 10,000 years ago, everyone in the world subsisted by hunting and gathering wild foods. According to Richard Borshay Lee, hunter-gatherers used their knowledge of the land that surrounded them to exercise their variety of strategies of foraging for food, and their life necessities. Over the next thousand years, agriculture has replaced foraging as the main subsistence practice, but some hunter-gatherers lived on in isolated areas of the world. Richard Lee and Megan Biesele conducted a study in the early 1960s to describe the important features of one of the last standing foraging groups, known as the Ju/’hoansi-!Kung residing in the Kalahari Desert (Lee 109). Please reference figure 1…
Since 1978, nearly 289,000 square miles have been destroyed across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana (Amazon, Butler, 1). The main reason for the destruction of the rainforest is so farmers can expand their land to produce more crops and the large logging companies come in and take the timber make products out of it. It has also been known that illegal loggers have come in and contributed to the destruction of the rainforest. The World Wildlife Foundation’s website (wwf.org) reported that a study by a Brazilian Commission showed that about 80% of all logging done in the 1990s was illegal (Logging, Viana G. 2). Another shocking statistic that is related to the sloth and the loss of their homes comes from.…
There has been an over sixty percent drop in the elephant population in the Congo rainforest because of those logging roads. A loss of biodiversity is a common problem caused by deforestation. The roads that have lead deeper into the forests made by logging companies results in overhunting of varies species such has the western lowland gorilla, leopard and elephant. This occurs because the roads are giving bush meat hunters more access to parts of the forest that were previously isolated , this sadly leads to extinction. The DRC Congo has been inhabited by humans for…
Chocolate is always in high demands around the world ; with only a select amount of countries who can provide it. Côte d’Ivoire provides 38% of the worlds' cocoa beans because they have the right environment for them. Even though they get a ton of business the effects of chocolate to Côte d’Ivoire is devastating. I believe chocolate is bad for Côte d’Ivoire because it's causing deforestation , child labor and unfair pay. Cocoa is causing deforestation in the environment of Côte d’Ivoire.…
There are plenty of campaigns to Save the Rainforests. When raising awareness for the plight rainforests are enduring, activists are not implying that other kinds of forests don’t matter; they are simply focusing on rainforests because they are the ones who face the most invasions by industrialization. As a community, people needed to focus on the rainforests. People did not create a Save the Pine Forests movement to stick up for other kinds of rainforests because they understood that, at this point in time, people needed to emphasize rainforests. This essay, however, is not a plug to save the rainforests.…
Every year, many plants and animal species are killed, or even put to the brink of extinction, due to Amazon Deforestation. “Forests are complex ecosystems that affect almost every species on the planet. When they are degraded, it can set off a devastating chain of events both locally and around the world.” (Bradford) By deforesting the amazon, many animals are losing their homes and food sources.…
The Congo Wars were a bloody conflict that occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the first war occurring from late 1996 to mid 1997 and the second war occurring from late 1998 to mid 2003. The first Congo War started in late 1996, when the Tutsis began to rebel against the authoritarian rule of one of the key players of the conflict, Mobutu Sese Seko, and his supporters, the Hutu. The Tutsis quickly gained traction and when they neared the capital of the DRC from various strategic points, Mobutu declared a state of emergency to try and regain control. Ultimately, this failed and a new president, Laurent Kabila, was established in 1997. A year later, a new rebellion in complaint of the remaining Hutu in the DRC by the Tutsi…
The voyages of Africa was to get around the continent of Africa, to reach the India the eastern part of Asia in order to get spices, silk, and other fine goods. Stories were told by ancient Egypt and Phoenicia that say the sailed to Africa and made it 2,600 years ago (Scheller, 25). It was to say that Arabs were the only ones really getting things from Asia. There was always two ways to get good to Europe from Asia. Caravan, by foot was a way to get there which involved camels carrying things on their back or pulling caravans.…
Organizations like the International Conservation Union, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Rainforest Alliance and the World Wildlife Fund are full of people passionate about saving the environment and wildlife of the world. They know one of the biggest ways to restore the environment and wildlife is to put a stop to deforestation. The people part of these organizations are the “Lorax” of the world; they speak for the…
Africa is a huge continent land mass that is” four times the size of the United States”, and that is “12 million square miles that is larger than North America”(Collins, Burns 7).Africa is filled deserts, savanna, mountains, mediterranean, rainforests, prairie grassland and vast forests. Through all this topical geography Africa does have very many environmental and health issues. In the beginning when Africa was becoming a continent it was”punctuated by every geographical and geological feature from high mountains to arid deserts”(Collins, Burns 21). The native people depend on their diverse environment to survive. Natives at first were spread out in few numbers in contrast to the size of Africa, and were few in number.…
The Great Bear Rainforest is a temperate rainforest of 6.4 million hectares, home to many rare and endangered species, as well as watersheds that provide the best salmon runs left in Canada. Unfortunately, the Great Bear Rainforest is under threat due to clearcutting and its effects on the environment. According to the David Suzuki Foundation, “30% of logging in the Great Bear Rainforest has been in watersheds since 2001”, meaning the water quality of that area has been affected. As for wildlife, deforestation is one of the leading causes of animal extinction in the world today. Due to the negative effects deforestation has on wildlife and watersheds, the acts of clearcutting in the Great Bear Rainforest must subside.…
We need to stop deforestation before it’s too late. “Rainforests contain about 50% of the world's wildlife population which is about 50,000 species”, and about 100 species from the rainforest are killed each day due to…
On earth, there are so many species of trees depending on the part of the world a person lives. Some trees are endangered and if no proper precautions are taken, those trees will be at a very serious risk of extinction. For example, “the so-called sex tree, Citropsis articulata, is quickly disappearing from Uganda 's Mabira Forest Reserve, one of the country 's last remaining rain forests, because its roots are believed to cure impotence” (Okeowo). Therefore, efforts should be made to preserve the endangered trees so that the next generation can also benefit from these trees. Forests are of two different types; some forests are natural and others are man-made.…
