Congdi Wang's Deer In Forest Analysis

I took another trip to Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts to see the Senior Exhibit. I was quite impressed by the artworks that were displayed in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Gallery. As I walked around the West Gallery, there was an artwork that I kept going back to. I reckoned it was a sign. An art student named Congdi Wang used a single instrument, a ballpoint pen specifically, to draw Deer in Forest (Figure 1). Compared to my inept and appalling ability to draw or doodle anything noteworthy on a paper, I was captivated by the careful, yet striking execution of Wang’s skill. As the title suggests, the artwork depicts a deer in a forest while a young girl chases a butterfly nearby. The perspective of the drawing is almost as if the viewer is hiding behind the branches of the tree, fearing to be seen. This creates a sense of ambiguity. …show more content…

The message in the drawing, such as the symbolic deer, comes as a playmate for our inner child, reminding us of the innocent times where the smallest flower provided a smile and excitement. Wang desired to direct the viewer’s ability to see the artwork as a “script for a movie” by illustrating to animations while relying on the viewers’ inner thoughts to interpret the messages in her drawing. Wang’s drawing persuade me to view life through youthful and innocent eyes; therefore, I am able to find serenity and peace within
