Conformity Vs Individuality

Hi Phuc, I think you did a great job explaining your agreement with Frank’s contention of the market no longer promoting conformity, but instead promoting individualism. With today’s younger generation that heavily believes in individuality, it is obvious that big companies and corporations use this in their marketing strategy. Slogans such as “There’s no one way to do it” by Levi’s and “Innovate Don’t Imitate” by Hugo Boss that Frank mentions are evident examples how companies use the popularity of individualism to promote their products. I liked your example of the iPhone because I can definitely see how it provides “never-ending self-fulfillment” and “constantly updated individualism” that Frank mentions. The iPhone is a great example because

Whether people are in uniform for a job or simply brushing their teeth they are all conforming to some common idea. To answer the controversial question that is conformists versus nonconformists we must first understand what each of those words mean. According to Merriam-Webster.com, someone who is a nonconformist is “a person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action”; while when it comes to Google, a conformist is someone “who conforms to accepted behavior or established practices”. Due to these particular definitions, one may argue that if someone is the person starting the “pattern of thought or action” wouldn’t that person be a nonconformist? The answer is no.…

In a social experiment conducted by Solomon Asch of 1951, Asch studied the impact of how social pressure from the majority can affect a person to conform (McLeod). The experiment consisted of one participant in a group of actors and all were asked to match the test line to a line most similar. In revealing their answers, the participant was asked to answer last out of the group while the actors all purposely answered incorrectly. With over 12 trials of the experiment, nearly 75% of the participants conformed to answering the question incorrectly at least once. This trend of conformity is also seen in today’s social influence.…

I used to dread the walk down the hallway to the 1st grade classroom due to hearing the derogatory marks aimed at me. My crime was being different. I spoke Punjabi instead of English because it gave me comfort that no one else attempted to give. I wore my clothes differently out of respect for my religion and ate my culture’s food. I kept my head down whenever they told me to go back from where I came and suffered due to my differences.…

I agree with Frank’s contention that “consumerism is no longer about “conformity” but about “difference”… It counsels not rigid adherence to the tastes of the herd but vigilant and constantly updated individualism” (qtd. in Frank 153). In contrast to advertisements in the past, which drew people in moral social behaviors and standards, current marketing strategies and advertisements are trying to educate consumers about being their own personalities and being self-fulfillment. According to Thomas Frank, this marketing idea, in fact, derived from the countercultural idea in 1950s when yuppies tried to do different things from their parents’ generation and to break all the current social rules since they could discover who they are only by breaking…

In this day and age, conformity is what decides who people are and what their future will look like. Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. For instance, teens doing drugs or drinking alcohol because friends or siblings tell them it’s okay to do so. However, I don’t think conformity is always a bad thing, and I first hand experienced the positive effects of conforming.…

Based off the videos in the week 6 Overview, I agree with Thomas Frank that marketing no longer promotes conformity. I believe that it does not because in the Dodge Rebellion 1967 Dodge Commercials they use words like bigger, flashier, new, instead of saying to buy the car that everyone has, etc. In paragraph 6 of Commodifying your Dissent, Frank states that people consume not to fit in but to prove that people are rebels and are promoting more self-fulfillment. Many young people today are busy worrying about themselves. Being a college student and a full-time worker, I am at the stage in my life where I currently am focused on my future.…

In relation to conformity, Emerson said that it was better to be true to an evil nature than to behave "correctly" because of society's demands or convictions. But is it still right when you kill, or rob, or do crimes just because that is what you want and the fact that the society loathes such deed does not bother you. Yes, we always want what's good. The philosopher Jean Sartre said in one of his works that nothing could be good for us without being good for all. And yes, they is nothing wrong if you let yourself be absorbed by the society and act "correctly" in other people's eyes as long as it would benefit or it will be better or the best for…

Conformity/ Stereotyping: Boys and Girls Toys Methodology that I would use to investigate gender differences focusing on conformity in children would be an experimental approach. Focusing on how children associate themselves and their identity by recording the descriptions children give of toys they like. In Blakemore & Centers (2005) they focused on how adults associate certain toys as being appropriate for girls or boys based on typical gender stereotyping. Boy toys were usually seen as violent; as for girls’ toys were associated with nurturing (Blakemore & Centers, 2005).…

Social conformity and conforming to what is popular and dominant has increasingly been seen in our society, even more so today, as things such as partying and drinking are becoming more dominant due to the fact that most people these days do it as well. has been shown in many research studies that introverts and extroverts differ from one another (Gray, 1970; Hunnicutt & Thompson, 1944; Furnham et al., 1994; Geen, 1984), but do people who perceive themselves as either introverted or extroverted actually differ in terms of social conformity? Or is everyone the same in this area? If they perceived themselves as more extroverted or introverted, will this affect the way they react in certain situations and to social norms and cues?…
