As human beings we establish groups for socialization. These groups consistently enforce conformity similar to a high school ‘click.’ For example, being members of the jocks you are urged to wear certain shoes, designer clothing, play on the football or soccer team and other forms of conformity. Enforcing conformity is formal and informal or positive and negative. This behavior can be on a small scale such as a group of friends or on a large scale such as a city or country. While there are people who conform we as human beings have a tendency to break out into our own niche. This behavior is what is known as deviant behavior. It isn’t necessarily illegal such as breast feeding in public however can be major such as murder. Deviant Behavior has no concrete definition where there are set rules to what is right and what is wrong. Disregarding criminal activity, “an act is labeled deviant or now depends on many factors, including location, audience and the individual committing the act (Baker 1963) [2]. For example Rosa parks during the Civil rights movement broke social norms when she sat in the front of a bus and not in the back as rules dictated by segregation. Yes it was a law and she was arrested but that was an act of deviant behavior that caused people to talk about in society. ‘The Rules of Sociological Method, Emile Durkheim said, “No act is inherently deviant in and of itself. Deviance is defined socially and will vary from one group to another.” [1].’ Meaning that the society who has a greater amount of power has the greater control over what is dictated as deviant and not. Different societies have more extreme methods of punishment when it comes to deviant behavior that others. That directly correlates to the variety of ideals in culture, society and religion. Conflict Perspective is the role of power and privilege in the Criminal Justice system” [1].’ Then you have social disorganization theory which posits that crime is more likely to occur in a community without any strong social ties which results in the absence in social control. This can cause high crime rates, high drug usage, violence, delinquency and poor parenting due to an impoverished community. Finally, Cultural Deviance Theory. This socioeconomic theory is the normalcy of the society in the lower-class cause crime.
