Conformity Is Better Than Conforming

Decent Essays
Some people may disagree with what I have stated in previous paragraphs. There are some people who believe that conformity is bad as a whole, and that we should all try not to conform. They believe that being an individual is better than conforming, because you don’t have to be under constant pressure to conform. They also believe that being an individual means that you do not conform whatsoever. Although I do see where they’re coming from, I still believe that conforming isn’t that bad of a thing, because it gives us all a sense of belonging. I also believe that you can conform and still be an individual, because whether you do or don’t conform, there are still different things that make every single person different from the rest.

In revealing their answers, the participant was asked to answer last out of the group while the actors all purposely answered incorrectly. With over 12 trials of the experiment, nearly 75% of the participants conformed to answering the question incorrectly at least once. This trend of conformity is also seen in today’s social influence.…

If an individual was different from others, they could had been looked on as an abnormality; shunned from the others in the group, and death was a possibility. Although this is a worst case scenario, it was a definite possibility in the paleolithic age. After thousands of years of evolution, this autopilot to conform is still imbedded in our sociology today.…
