When people hear the word conformity, they think very negative thoughts. Our culture idealistically believes that one must stand out from the rest of society. When people think of conformity, they think of obeying people without hesitation or without thought. However, despite all these beliefs conformity can beneficial. Conformity can help cause friendly competition, give people a better understanding of others, and can help save lives.
Without conformity, games could not exist, causing rules in games to help keep games fun. In Rules of the Game, the narrator learns how to play competitive chess. When a large group of people share similar lifestyles, they can all relate to each other. When people speak the same language, they can verbally communicate. In My English, when Alvarez first moved to New York, she thought New Yorkers “must be smarter.” It was only later she “began to understand more and more—not less and less.” With Alvarez’s struggle to conform with a nations national language, she gained a better understanding on not only English, but the people who speak English. “It took some time before I understood that Americans were not necessarily a smarter, superior race.”
One other positive consequence of conformity, it can keep people safe. When a person conforms to rules, laws, or advice that are meant to protect himself and others, everyone is safe. However, when a person decides that he does not believe in the advice, he reckless endangerment may harm others. In the Scarlet Ibis, the narrator through his actions accidently kills his brother, Doodle, because of his pride. If the narrator considered the risk he putting his brother which the doctor clearly warns “with his weak heart, the strain would probably kill him,” then Doodle’s death could have been prevented.
Conformity can help maintain games, create a better understanding between people, and prevent deaths. People will realize at some point that conformity can be helpful in many

    Conformity is when a person develops behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. Solomon Asch conducted an experiment in 1950 were they placed one person in a room full of actors, a card with three lines on it would be shown to everyone in the room and they had to pick which line was the longest.
