Those who look to be ‘in’ are said to do this because “conformity soothes” (Shpancer, par. 1). It’s almost as if blending in in a certain situation is comforting. These individuals also tend to look for social cues like the ones in Noam Shpancer’s article on conformists, “First, we look to others for information about what’s going on (informational cues). Second, we look for others to see what to do about it (normative cues)” (par. 5). In using these cues, citizens rely on other individuals; ones they might not know, to adapt to a certain situation with the appropriate behavior. In doing this a person no longer feels left out and can almost fit into this mold of a conformist filled room. However, being in a situation out of one’s comfort zone can cause pressure to the individual, causing them to seek conformity, mainly through the cues. Because this pressure exists and is very real, it sometimes leads people to do horrendous things no one could ever see that person, or most people for that matter doing. This is said of the individuals in the Holocaust that shedded their individuality almost entirely in exchange for their lives that became centered on Hitler’s views whom the philosopher, Hannah Arendt, said to be “ordinary people placed under extraordinary pressure to conform” (Shpancer, par.

Society’s behavior is guided by a powerful set of unwritten rules. Those that act outside of the rules receive ridicule, criticism, or rejection. Out of the seven billion people who live in this world, most would say they conform to society, which is very natural. Humans are social beings and conforming to society is one way that we show each other that we are like them. Society trusts those that conform, and distrusts those that that don’t. By conforming to society's expectation, you gain trust from the society. A disadvantage to conforming to society is when you join the group, you’re technically no longer your own individual. George S. Patton once said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then sobody isn’t thinking.” It’s like you’re a sheep, and when you conform to society's beliefs, you join the rest of the herd.…

Most people find it easier to rely on others and to be a social conformist rather than being a social non-conformist. Being a social conformist is easier because you do not have to explain why you want to be different or why you refuse to give in to peer pressure. People tend to find it easier to deal with peer pressure if they follow the crowd. When undergoing peer pressure, a lot of the time it is easier to do what others do instead of having to explain yourself.
