(A detailed response to a quote by Colin Wilson)

What does it mean to be a conformist? Oxford Dictionaries defines the word conformist as, “a person who conforms to accepted behavior or established practices.” So what did the famous writer, Colin Wilson mean when he said, “The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain.” This quote derived from Wilson is a very popular, and well analyzed quote, so much so that scholars around the world have taken the time to try and decipher the philosopher’s words. Colin Henry Wilson was an english writer, philosopher and novelist. he also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal. So what did Mr.

It should not come as a surprise to most of us that objects are innately affected by the things that around them. For example, if you were to leave a carton of ice-cream outside on the sidewalk during a hot summer day, the ice-cream would melt; this is because the ice-cream is being innately affected by the things that around it. Recently, new research has been conducted from scientists from all around the world that help support the claim that humans are essentially affected by the things that around them, much like the ice-cream. Most of us can agree with this claim, as we have seen it to be true in our own lives as well as those around us. If you were to compare two children, one that was raised in the harlems of Chicago and another from Denmark, you would see that each child is quite different from the other. Some scholars believe that this comparison comes back to the observations of one important philosopher, Socrates. Socrates is responsible for creating the theory that men (and women) are only as capable as their education. It is evident that Colin Wilson also understood this notion, if men (and women) are surrounded by things that make them feel as though they must conform and display a sense of stoicism, than that is exactly what they will do. That is why I agree with Colin Wilson, the average man is a conformist...notice how he says, “the average man”, not all men may be surrounded by the things that make them feel as though they must conform, but the average man is. Clearly, humans are deeply affected by their environment, and that it is why this idea helps to support Wilson’s

To Conform or Not to Conform? Conformity is a life that only leads to unhappiness and a voice that will not be heard. The sheep from Animal Farm chooses to conform through their slogans, while Christopher choose to continue writing a book he was told to discontinue. The sheep unknowingly followed everything the pigs told them to do while Christopher knowingly disobeyed his father. Conformity gives the person a choice to use their voice or be silenced, though both will cause a negative outcome.…

Hipster Cows (An Analysis of Conformity Through Colin Wilson's Quote) Emerson once said, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. " Man will never be able to fully eradicate conformity, because it is human nature to a certain degree, but one can prevent the unnecessary conformity. The brave few who follow the path less traveled often finds it a rewarding experience. If one can escape the repertoire of life expectations, their roadmap of vitality will be as colorful as Neapolitan ice cream.…

Blindly Conforming Everyone is a conformist one way or another, even if they feel alone or different from the rest. Many despise the word conformity, but it really isn’t that bad. In his play, Antigone, Sophocles will show this idea of conformity through each of his characters.…

It isn’t always good to conform because you wouldn’t be as unique or as happy if you had the same feelings, beliefs, and actions as any other person. In “The Pedestrian” when Leonard Mead tells the police officer/car that his profession was writing the officer implied that he had no profession. This statement shows that one person could think one thing while another person could think otherwise. Also just because something is considered odd or out of the ordinary it doesn't always mean that it isn’t right. Another example on why conformity isn’t always good is in the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” when Leppard said “As far as i’m concerned, if there is a paradise on Earth, I’m in it.…

In the movie Dead Poets Societ, written by Tom Schulman,it shows us how conformity does so many bad things. One ecample can be when John Keating says,”Seize the day. Becuase believe it or not each and everyone of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold and die. ”This quote implies that you shouldn’t take life for granted and should spend it doing something great. Another thing Mr.Keating says is ,”You must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own eventhough others may think them odd or unpopular.…

Colin Wilson in his quote is trying to explain the downfalls of normality. He describes how our day to day normal lives are similar to a cow standing in the rain, just taking it. I completely agree with Colin Wilson, I think he has a very good point about normality today. How we see everything pass by us, yet it doesn't effect us in a deep rooted sense. The average man conforms so easily to the demands of society and he takes no gratitude in individuality.…

From the moment we are born we enter a society where it is the norm to conform and obey. From a very young age we learn that if we do not obey then we will suffer the consequences for these actions. People within society have a desire to be accepted and to belong; whether to a group or a family this social influence can change our thoughts, feeling and even our behaviour. So can we truly be an individual or are we pre-defined by a set of social boundaries? ‘Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth’ (J F. Kennedy).…

When the ancestors of our past look at our culture, the way things are handled, and they way people handle things today, I am sure they all have a different opinion. Some may believe that we have created a corrupt society and others may think that we have well educated the people in our culture today. Colin Wilson a well quoted man believe that the society has become corrupt and that the average man in our society and become nearly useless. Colin Wilson once said,” The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain”, I heavily disagree with this statement. The first statement that Wilson makes, is that the average man today is a conformist.…

"If they jumped off a bridge, would you follow?" Another word for a conformist is follower. They tend to go with the flow and be in the "latest trend". Conformity vs. Individuality An Interpretation of Colin Wilson’s Quote Colin Wilson is one of few people who can take a step back from their lives and the world around them and see the bigger picture. Wilson’s quote; “The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain,” is a perfect example of this. It is true that most people in the world are followers of whatever they see happening around them. Unfortunately, few are able to recognize their willingness to follow the “norm,” and consequently are stuck in a conformist lifestyle throughout their entire life.…

Now that we have covered an opinion that see’s conformity as something positive, let's see it from a new perspective. Common sense seems to dictate that it is better to be individuals than to conform with society. In an article I found that talks about Thoreau’s view of conformity and individuality and it says that “Henry David Thoreau, a Transcendentalist, believed that individuals should be self-reliant and live a simple life.” I agree with Thoreau because we should all only be pendent of ourselves and not be working so hard to fit in with the norms of society which is to work unfulfilling jobs just so we can buy materialistic things that we truly don't need, because you wouldn't be living a simple life we would just be “conforming to prescribed…

The term conformist is defined as, “a person who conforms, or behaves according, to accepted behavior or established practices.” Stoicism is defined as “the endurance of pain or hardship without a display of feelings and without complaint.” Clearly, it isn’t too difficult to decipher what Colin is implying about most individuals in society. Many people have to suffer hardships and injustice in their life, whether it be a loss of a loved one, a divorce, etc. As a response, individuals often respond by being paralyzed, not because they lack the will, but because they are afraid of the outcome.…

Stoicism is defined as “a philosophy, based on the ideas of Zeno that held that people could only be happy when living in accordance with nature and accepting whatever happened. ”(McKay et al. 138). Zeno of Citium traveled to Athens with the intent to form his own school, the Stoa, which took its namesake from the covered walkways where he preferred to teach. Stoicism instills the development of self-control and resilience to overcome “destructive emotions”, such as passion. Rather than eliminate all emotions, it teaches to change them by abstaining from worldly pleasures, which allows a person to have clear judgement, inner calm and freedom from suffering.…
