Raymond Carver’s “Popular Mechanics” follows the story of a conflicting couple. The story opens with the husband packing his stuff and getting ready, while his wife in turn emphasizes her happiness in him leaving. Soon after she notices a picture of their baby and heads out the door with the picture in hand. He asks for it back, but instead still tells him to leave. Once he finishes panicking, he heads out the door to see his wife standing in the kitchen’s doorway while holding the baby. At this point it becomes apparent that he didn’t exactly mean for her to give him the picture, but for her to give him the baby. They began to fight over who will keep the baby.
