Conflict, whether internal or external, is an important part of our lives, and is often the foundation of many stories. It has negative and positive effects, but overall society would not function the way it does if there was no such thing as conflict. We would act almost as machines; programed to work in a manner where we all do one certain thing, there would be no progress in anything; no one would want to go against what everyone else did. Most people struggle with their own thoughts and feelings. Many times people may ask themselves if they are doing the right thing. In school, students always are asking themselves did they study enough? Select the correct answer? Why does this teacher have a problem with them? All of these questions help …show more content…

People often go through conflicts with themselves and others when they lose someone close to them, such as in (Ruth). When she lost her Husband and children, she had no one to go to besides her deceased husband's mother. When conflicts occur with others, often time each person may at one point question if it was their own fault that the conflict was brought about. On (Train), Nanomie may have felt like it was her fault due to her showing interest into the lion art piece. One of the biggest examples of external conflict was in the story (Dead Man) the teacher came into an region where he was not from, and tried to completely take over, change the natives way of life, and interfere with their ancient religious belief of the path of the dead. The natives took this action as a attack, and destroyed the flower beds of the school and made it look like a tornado had gone …show more content…
We need internal conflicts with ourselves to help us make some decisions, how to treat others, ourselves, and how we view life and to help us grow. In (Train), if Naomi never had any internal conflict with how her husband was acting, would she be happy with him for the rest of her life? Probably not. She realized that he was not who she thought he was and had to question her decisions in life. When someone makes an morally bad choice, they normally end up getting a guilty conscience and making an attempt to either make up for it and/or to not do it again. Conflicts help to build our morals and values, helping us realize the impact we have on ourselves and what we can do to others. In (Prisoner) the man with his glasses realized that what he was trying to do was morally correct, he was only being punished for the color of his skin. He told himself that one day he would be able to finally be a politician. External conflicts also help other to view ourselves. Such as in (Train), Nonami based her opinion of her husband based off his actions. If she would only have been worried about how she acted, she would have never seen that part of her husband. In school and at work, people in power determine how to treat students or workers based on how they act, toward them and others.
In life there is always conflicts with people, whether it be internal or external. They make us human, they
