Conflict in the workplace is a common occurrence that causes major disparities between employees. It is important to recognize conflict in a timely manner in order to maintain a healthy working environment. The discussion below will include the major causes of conflict in the workplace and my position on if conflict is always negative. The steps for preventing destructive conflict, negotiating conflict through a win-win solution, and avoiding pitfalls in the workplace will also be included in this discussion. The major causes of conflict in the workplace include content conflict, values conflict, negotiation-of-selves conflict, and institutional conflict (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). Content conflict arises when there’s a disagreement over a statement or an idea; there is a dispute whether the idea is right or wrong (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). Miscommunication can lead to a content conflict. The second conflict is values conflict. This type of conflict occurs when one set of values clashes with another (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). For instance, conflict can arise when there is a generation gap between employees; young workers may possess different workplace values than older workers. The next conflict is negotiation-of-selves conflict. This conflict arises when a person defines him or herself to others and responds to their implied definition of him or her (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). This includes when employees see themselves differently than their boss sees them.…
