The Conflict within the Conflict: It Takes more than a Village
In 2011, I was working as a health outreach worker at an elementary school under a Federal Grant that promoted community schools. One afternoon, the CEO of the organization called me on my cellphone to set up a meeting because my boss “the project director” of the grant had resigned and I was being offered the job on the spot. Learning this took me by surprise but I accepted on the spot. How hard could it be? Turns out that to meet grant requirements, the lead agency needed to partner with three other organizations that would promote the effort. Essentially, we were tasks with creating Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) that provided comprehensive academic, social, and health services for students, students’ family members, and community members that would result in improved educational outcomes for children (Department of Education, 2016). My new boss, the CEO, called a meeting with the partners to introduce me, and the level of anxiety, anger, and dismay amongst those present was evident even to a stranger like me. However, one important takeaway I took from the meeting was that no matter what everyone was there for the kids and they were working together because “it takes a village” to improve outcomes for children until that moment.
