Today, conflict theorists around the globe are shaking up society as we know it. All over the world, conflict theorists are encouraging people to battle the status quo. Now, how are conflict theorists challenging society today? Hundreds of years ago, marriage was a scared union between a man and a woman. Currently, conflict theorists are influencing millions across America to defy the social norms of marriage with the conflict perspective. According to the book, “Sociology: The Science of Human Organization,” by Jonathan Turner, the conflict perspective views the world riddled with tension and strife, and seeks to discover the tensions that exists behind the façade of order (Turner 31). At this moment in time, people all over the world are questioning their old traditional family values, and pushing the boundaries on the conservative views of marriage. I believe we’re all entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, whether we are gay, lesbian, transgender, straight, or bisexual. America is land of the free and the home of the brave, so all of us as Americans should be entitled to marry who we love freely. Now, more people than ever before are pushing the boundaries of what marriage really is. According to a study conducted by UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute, about 9 million Americans declare themselves as lesbian, gay, transgender or bisexual (“Gay Marriage Facts and Statistics 2013” 1).
