Social Classes: Our Greatest Setback

Social Classes: Our Greatest Setback Growing up you get asked what you want to be when you grow up. You are told that you can be anything, an astronaut, NBA star or even President of the United States. You are told with hard work, anything is possible but is that really true? The prophet Jesus once said to love your neighbor for everyone is made in his image. How many people actually love their neighbor. People tend to judge others on their place in the social class system. Why is this? What social class you belong to and interacting between two different social classes may cause conflict. Before diving deeper into this subject, we must define conflict. Conflict Theory is defined by The Real World: An Introduction to Sociology as “a paradigm …show more content…
I saw this woman who appeared to be around 5ft 4in and African American. The first thing I noticed was the undesirable clothing she was wearing tight spandex on her pants yet she was very overweight so it looked kind of nasty. She was also wearing a red t-shirt that looked a little too tight on her. She had 5 kinds around her all under the age of about 8. Her hair was short and red. It looked like a wig. She was having a hard time controlling her kids for they were being loud and disruptive. She has no jewelry or tattoos that I could see. She walked with a waddle kind of like a penguin for she was very overweight. I followed her out and acted like I was going to my car. She had a late 1990s GMC Jimmy. It was green and was very rusty and looked like it was not being taken care of. I immediately thought that this woman was lower middle class/ lower class and below the poverty line. She just looked like a mess. I felt sorry for …show more content…
I went to Saint Thomas Academy for high school. A very elite school with a lot of upper class. Many times, my friends and classmates would bash many public schools like South Saint Paul and Sibley, mainly for fun and a rivalry but sometimes because they thought that public schools were below STA. A sense of entitlement grows on you at STA. STA is also a Catholic school. We had mass for almost every event. Talking about Jesus giving to the poor, etc. Many Republicans that I know talk about the lower class as peasants. Lower Class people are told that they are lazy and don’t want to work their way into the middle class. Based on what I saw with the African American women at Target, I can see why people accuse the lower class of being lazy. Nothing against lower class people but when you dress dirty and have no care for how you look and don’t take care of your car, people are only going to think negatively. It is up to you to change that but you cant do it all by yourself. People being forced to help the poor through government programs like welfare causes conflict. It is a latent function. A latent function is “the less obvious, perhaps unintended functions of a social structure” (Ferris 24). The prophet Jesus once said to love your neighbor for everyone is made in his image. How many people actually love their neighbor. People tend to judge others on their place in the social class

In his essay, "Class in America," Gregory Mantsios assures that Americans are afraid to distinguish the difference of one another through economic means. He states that the power of oppression and the class system, keep citizens in the classes they are born into. In fact, he supports his evidence by describing four myths and seven realities. According to Mantsios, the poor have so many disadvantages including the lack of jobs, health issues, and lack of education.…

The democratic society’s goal is to fulfill equal freedom for all, but the reality of the situations threatens that fact with the presence of corruption, poverty, and the discrepancy of power between the classes. In the novel Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the imbalance of power within the totalitarian government controlled caste system exposes the exploitative nature of society, by constructing a stark difference in the classes; to illustrate the struggle of the underprivileged beneath the power of a society concreted in the ideology of capitalist totalitarian. The Caste system within the World state creates a distinct difference in the people, allowing an oppressive drawback for the lower classes. In the World State the Castes…

Class Structure in American Society According to Stanley Aronowitz, “class is deeply embedded in the recesses of our cultural and political unconsciousness.” This quote is particularly meaningful, because it is so true. Class determines almost everything we do weather we realize it our not. Class shapes who we are and where we would like to be as a person.…

Throughout U.S history, socio-economic classes have been established to categorize our place in society. The lower, middle, and upper class, make up the socio-economic structure of the American people. The social system groups people according to wealth, income, education, social network and other factors. Many different models have been proposed to characterize people’s social class, though the U.S most commonly uses the simple three class structure. The middle class, the social group between the upper and working classes, including professional workers, small business owners, and low-level managers; is essential to a thriving economy and successful democracy (Social Class, n.d).…

The working-class has no disposable income. McGerr writes, “There was also virtually no chance for American workers to mimic the outlook of the upper ten and celebrate a life of leisure.” (McGerr 5) The working class could barely support their lives, they definitely could not entertain the idea that they could take part in certain pleasures only the upper ten and the middle class could afford.…

The stereotype of these classes lead people to believe there is a limitation on ones dreams and education. Realistically not everybody’s dreams come true. Those who work hard with a little bit of luck in the right situations may be able to pull off what they dream about. However how easy that whole process can be depends on your “social class”. For those less fortunate people that do not have those ideal circumstances we’ll…

If there were such a thing as a classless society in America I do not believe that my life would be affected very much, if not at all. Along with believing that my life would not be affected I also don’t think my relationships would change, and if they did I believe it would be for the better. I believe it would be for the better cause in a classful society it is judgment all the time based on the class that you belong to, it does matter how you are on the inside to the classful society, but if there was a classless society I believe that there would be less judgment so building strong relationships and even gain a few new relationships would because a new thing. I think that if America became a classless society, many new ideologies would…

Social class in America is an uncomfortable subject for many Americans; most believe that America is an essentially middle-class nation, however, author Gregory Mantsios argues otherwise. In this article, I will break apart “Class in America-2012” and explain how it creates a persuasive effect on readers. Mantsios accomplishes this effect by debunking popular myths through statistical evidence and providing real-life examples. This analysis will only provide the author’s opinions, and not my own, as to remain objective and fair throughout. Is the social class divide in America as large as most Americans think?…

While writing this paper I learned a lot about classism today. I never realized how much of a problem classism still is today. Hazaras are only one of the many groups of people that suffer from classism. It shocked me that despite everything they have been through, that they still face discrimination and oppression. I always thought of classism as more of an issue of the past.…

The culture has been unfairly divided for centuries, including by race, social class and social status. Sociologist, Max Weber implied that individuals ought to be arranged in society by using certain factors. Not to mention there are a number of social classes, each of them consisting of distinctive characteristics. Family structures and neighborhoods are affected in both good and bad ways by these social classes. The social class inequality are perceived differently by the three theoretical paradigms.…

As we get older we assume that we get a say on how we want to live our own life. If that’s the case, then why are few rich and successful, whereas the majority are suffering and are impoverished? In a sense we are all human beings therefore we should all be treated in an equal manner and be given equal opportunities in life. Reality however is a killer for we find that society, which was initially used as a survival technique by earliest ancestors, has more of a say in our lives then we do ourselves.…
