Kim Mauck was hired as the principal for Mill Creek Upper Elementary in 2005. She is currently in her 11th year of administration for the Belton School District. Kim started her teaching career as a 9th grade language arts teacher and then was hired as an assistant principal with in the Lee Summit School District. She received her Masters in Administration from the University of Central Missouri and is currently perusing her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration through St. Louis University.
I scheduled a meeting with my Principal, Kim Mauck, through email to discuss school communication. We met in her office from 12:45 – 1:40. I asked her a series of questions and she answered them using her own leadership experience. Our conversation

Remind 101 has been a lifesaver for Kim this year. She has 245 families signed up to receive texts from her remind account. Mill Creek also has a twitter account, website, and Facebook page.
9. How do you communicate to the Superintendent?
a. Kim tries to keep communication with the Superintendent to the minimum. She wants to be seen as a self-sufficient principal who can make decisions on her and does not need to always ask for help. She will contact the Superintendent when he initiates communication, face-to-face conversations, emergency situations, or when a student is put on long-term suspension.
10. Are there any lessons you would share regarding conflict resolution skills?
a. In any conflict situation always seek to understand. Everyone wants their voice to be heard. See every person with a positive intent, isn’t that what we do with kids? Why wouldn’t we do that with adults? When teachers are in a tough situation, let them figure out how to get out of it. Never give a teacher a concrete solution because if it would fall through the principal would be the one to blame. Don’t take everything personally. People are not going to like you for the sole reason that you are the principal. Don’t be afraid to have a strong conversation with anyone. Be direct and if they don’t comply write them up. Negativity is toxic in a work place. You have to know when to speak and when to keep your mouth

Kim had an “ah-ha” moment when she was first introducing PBIS to the Mill Creek staff. They were trying to come up with expectations for the building, particularly what noise level the hallways should be. It took hours to have everyone’s voice to be heard but after that she realized how important collaboration is. Kim uses a lot of surveys so that staff can have choice in their professional development days.
Analysis
Mill Creek does a wonderful job of communicating to parents. Remind 101 and Facebook have helped keep parents up to date on their students learning. Kim has a way of making people instantly feel comfortable and heard. She is skilled in deescalating situations and is not afraid of conflict. She is very direct and handles problems with staff members quickly. Negativity is not something that is going to be tolerated at Mill Creek. I admire her communication skills and respect her as Mill Creek’s principal. It was evident that Mill Creek is lacking community involvement. Our school does work with Carnage Village and the local community center but I would like to see participation with more community members. As a future administrator I will identify key members in our community and invite them into the school or classroom to teach students about their job or trade. I think this would not only benefit our students but the community as

Praise of an Angelic Teacher; Kathy Miller chooses not to rule the world Before addressing the absolutely critical need for all students to pursue the love of Kathy Miller, it is important to realize the greatness that Mrs. Miller has achieved. In all of her years at Banjo High School she has perfected the junior SAT, and in her humbleness she would never lead you to believe that she was the cause of this massive jump in the SAT averages. She has also been a steady member of the Soccer Club for many years, never once convincing them that she had enough power to pressure them into making her child the starting goalie. No sir, Kathy has been faithful and has never once used tenure as an excuse to lazily teach or become enthralled in the power…

The Conflict Theory’s focus point is class, gender, race/ethnicity, age, and inequality. At Manassas High School the minority enrollment is 100% of the student body, while the average for the state of Tennessee is 35%. After their first win against a 3A/4A school the cops did not allow them to shake hands, they told their team to get on the bus and go home. It is ironic how a majority white team use to pay a majority black team $3,000 to get their butts kicked, but when the majority black team wins the majority white team does not want to shake hands. Manassas was at the bottom of their class, “there is a lot of folks out east of here that don’t think we belong”, said by Courtney.…

I am writing this letter of reference for Mrs. Mary Livingston because it signifies that Mary is seeking employment different than Keystone Learning Services. As the former Director of Special Education at Keystone, I hired Mary initially to work as a special education teacher for Keystone’s Alternative Middle and High School. Her strongest asset during that time, was acting as a diplomat between several volatile individuals. When an Assistant Director position at Keystone opened, I moved Mary into that role.…

These situations ought to be handled in the most appropriate and confidential matter. Using the principle of subsidiarity and dealing with challenges at the lowest level of proficient authority is essential. This incident involves a student whose huge future can be threatened. The reputation of the school, the educators, and the administrative staff can be tarnished also. Not to mention, the case is occurring while there is political dissatisfaction, a broadening racial divide, and economic deterioration.…

Although there are many problems in this case, the main problem is lack of student learning, which needs to be the top priority of a free and appropriate public education, aside from safety, which is always at the forefront. As the principal, I need to reflect on my last 2 years of making an attempt to develop positive and trusting relationships, and my own growth as an educational leader. The problem here is that Principal Hulbert is still at a Level 1 leadership role; where people follow you simply because of your title. This was demonstrated when Bill Osborne, the employee spokesperson, told the principal, “You are the boss and you can force us to revise the lesson plans. Just tell us what you want in the lesson plans, we’ll copy it, and we can go on to more important issues,” (Kowalski, 2012, p.5).…

As I read this piece by Protheoroe, I thought about how the best walkthroughs and evaluations came from my vice principal, now our principal, two years ago. He really made walkthroughs a purpose. Each month, he would do walkthroughs, and provide teachers with data on what he saw. For example, one month, he wanted to focus on small group teaching. He provided teachers with data to show how many walkthroughs he made, and what grades he saw doing small group instruction.…

The next theme that came up in the interview was dealing with parents. Research is beginning to show that there are many benefits when parents connect with teachers and establish a productive relationship (Weinstein & Novodvorsky, 2015). Mrs. Brighton makes sure that she post grades regularly as well as always accepts their calls and emails promptly. She believes that it is best to be kind and respectful to all parents (M. Brighton, personal communication, October 10, 2017). In this way, she has aligned herself with Fritz Redl and William Wattenberg in forming a connective structure between teachers and parents (Brown, 2017).…

Principal vs. Superintendent Principals and Superintendents are both administrative professionals within a school district setting. Both administrators are leaders and work closely together to assure the district mission and vision is being met. Superintendents and principals work together to write, review, and enforce policies and procedures throughout the district. Although both administrators work closely together, their roles within the district differ tremendously. The superintendent oversees the entire district, whereas a principal oversees an assigned school building.…
