Conflict is a part of the lives of many. There are various forms of conflict. While there may be mundane type of conflict that we deal with daily, there is conflict that may seem far worse. Relational conflict is something that plagues many families in contemporary society and it is not something that seems to be going away any time soon. In order to better understand conflict within the family we must understand what it is. This brings us back to the point about every day conflict. Bickering amongst siblings or even spouses is considered a mundane occurrence. However, arguing and strife between spouses that leads to divorce is not considered to be as normal of an occurrence. This does not mean that it is not something that happens all too often. What is the difference between now and then, or between our culture and those who frown upon divorce? This also involves social learning theory. Although divorce has become a social norm it is also still thought to be shameful. Many learn from the behavior of peers that there is certain shame and stigmatism that comes along with being open about divorce. It is a valid possibility that we have been learning divorce is easy, but still shameful. By witnessing the harsh scrutiny of high profile divorce cases or the judgment of those we know who have divorced, we learn that divorce is something to be ashamed of. We see different ways to deal with the conflict; typically in ways that are not constructive such as avoidance. M. E.
