Life is like a game. Obstacles will always be in one’s way. There will be conflict before one reaches their goal. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, the three types of conflict, man versus man, man versus nature, and man versus self, are demonstrated.
There is a clear example of man versus man conflict in the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. After learning who the General hunts, Rainsford refuses to hunt with him. The General decides that he will hunt Rainsford instead and says, “‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine’”(20). This is a man versus man conflict because the General and Rainsford are competing against each other. Rainsford is equipped with weapons and will have three days to outwit the General. The General will have three days to hunt him, and if Rainsford is not found within those

Rainsford is swimming through the ocean. As he reaches shore he stumbles upon jagged rocks. “With his remaining strength he dragged himself from the swirling waters”(12). Rainsford is against the jagged rocks and water which he cannot control. He carefully climbs the pointed rocks. He reaches the shore after pulling himself out of the water and decides to rest through the night. Rainsford against the water and jagged rocks establishes man versus nature conflict.
Man versus self is also present in this short story. Rainsford hears the General’s wolves in the distance. He knows he has to make a decision quickly. “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was...He could flee”(22). Rainsford has to make a life threatening decision of what to do, it is him against his thoughts. He decides to run and try to save himself. Rainsford jumps into the water to avoid being killed by General Zaroff and his pack of wolves. This struggle between Rainsford and himself is man versus self

Using imagery, the author from this passage in “The Most Dangerous Game” is showing how Zaroff admires to Rainsford, and even looks up to him. After Zaroff introduced himself to Rainsford, he graciously provided him dinner. During the meal, the general was “studying him, appraising him narrowly,” (Connell 7). To put differently, during the meal, Zaroff was examining him, surveying his new guest. Zaroff was most likely checking if Rainsford met up to the expectations the general had set for him.…

The author of the book The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell, put an amazing amount of imagery in this book to enhance the plot. The imagery enhanced the ploy by making the reader feel like they are on ship - trap island. Richard Connell talks about the tropical island, and makes you have the exact tropical island he was thinking of when he wrote the story. Another use that enhances the story is the use of ironicness, metaphors, and similes. A use of a metaphor is “The sea was as flat as a plate - glass window”.…

Someones true self is usually prevailed when they're alone. To me this means that you only show your true self when no one is looking and I definitely agree with that. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford shows that he is different when he is alone by demonstrating his resourceful thinking, lack of humor, and seriousness. The first reason I agree with the prompt is Rainsford displays very strategical thinking.…

Like Water for Chocolate RWL #1 Throughout this quarter, I’ve deepened my understanding upon the common theme of “conflict”. Over time, as I was being given language arts content, such as the reading “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, the short story “By Any Other Name” by Santha Rama Rau, and the film “The Debut” that our class all watched, my knowledge grew upon the matter and I grew comfortable identifying key types of conflict. Literally, conflict remains present within everyone; whether it’s as small as a miscommunication between a quarterback and wide receiver or as big as a unhealthy situation existing between a husband and wife. Now, before my comfortability with it gets iced up like Tony Romo in the playoffs, I’m prepared to discuss what I’ve encountered in the first three chapters of our class’s recently introduced novel “Like Water for Chocolate”, published by…

A Good Rewrite is Hard to Find In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the thrilling story of a skilled hunter named Rainsford, who washes up on a mysterious island where he falls captive to General Zaroff, a psychopathic man that preys on “the scum of the earth” simply for the thrill and excitement of the hunt. Connell builds suspense throughout the story through his use of dialogue and character behaviour. Richard Connell predominantly uses character interactions to build suspense as the plot progresses, utilizing dialogue to create a mysterious tone and to foreshadow the predicaments that Rainsford will soon find himself in. During the conversation between Whitney and Rainsford on the yacht, Whitney tells Rainsford that he felt an oddly distinct chill while sailing past the supposedly cursed island, even though "there was no breeze [and the] sea was as flat as a plate-glass window" (Connell 2).…

Sometimes in order to solve an external conflict, we must solve our internal conflict first. In his short story “The Interlopers”, H.H. Munro presents the “character vs. self” conflict as the most significant. This is because it affected the inciting incident, rising action of the story, and climax. The first reason of why the “character vs. self” conflict was the most important, is because it created the inciting incident.…
