There is a clear example of man versus man conflict in the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. After learning who the General hunts, Rainsford refuses to hunt with him. The General decides that he will hunt Rainsford instead and says, “‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine’”(20). Rainsford is swimming through the ocean. As he reaches shore he stumbles upon jagged rocks. “With his remaining strength he dragged himself from the swirling waters”(12). Rainsford is against the jagged rocks and water which he cannot control. He carefully climbs the pointed rocks. He reaches the shore after pulling himself out of the water and decides to rest through the night. Rainsford against the water and jagged rocks establishes man versus nature conflict.
Man versus self is also present in this short story. Rainsford hears the General’s wolves in the distance. He knows he has to make a decision quickly. “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was...He could flee”(22). Rainsford has to make a life threatening decision of what to do, it is him against his thoughts. He decides to run and try to save himself. Rainsford jumps into the water to avoid being killed by General Zaroff and his pack of wolves. This struggle between Rainsford and himself is man versus self
