The Academy Award winning film Ordinary People shows various ways on how the Jarrett family struggles with Conflict Management. The Jarrett Family includes, Conrad, Beth, Calvin, and Buck, their son who passed from a boating accident. Each individual family member struggles with their own personal conflicts.
CONRAD:
Conrad Jarrett, the youngest son of Beth and Calvin Jarrett. Conrad is the Protagonist in this movie he struggles mentally with the death of his brother Buck. Throughout the story in various scenes he holds his feelings back and runs off. For Example, Conrad and Jeannine go to McDonalds for a date, they start talking about what has happened, but they are rudely interrupted by the other swim members. Conrad tells Jeannine that it is time to go home and he is quiet in the car and very kept to himself. Conrad was using avoidance, he could have dealt with the situation better by trying to tell Jeannine that he didn’t like how he handled the situation and how he wanted it to be different, than not talking to her. Conrad could have asked to go somewhere else and open up to Jeannine on his own terms, and receive the help he needs from what he is dealing with.

Beth struggles the most with Conflict Management out of the whole family. Beth during the story, slowly aparts herself from the family and becomes very distant. For Example, after Beth comes back from Texas, she is sitting in the living room with Calvin, and Conrad walks in and gives her a hug. Beth withdraws from Conrad and cannot hug him back, she feels very empty when her own son gives her a hug and can’t deal with the sorrow and death of her other son Buck. Beth could have dealt with this conflict in a much better way, by telling Conrad it just wasn’t the time for her and that she is still struggling mentally with everything that has
