In “A&P” by John Updike, the narrator, Sammy, is a 19-year old working at a grocery store. “A&P” was published and set in the 1960’s, at a time where conformity and conservative nature was common. At the grocery store that Sammy works at there is a sign with strict rules stating that women must have their shoulders covered and appropriate clothing. Sammy’s manager, Lengel, is very strict and will not hesitate to tell someone when they are not abiding the rules. The main conflict of the story is when three teenage girls walk into the grocery store wearing bathing suits and the manager doesn’t want to service them.
