Conflict Between Ukraine And Russia

Great Essays
Much debate and conflict is occurring between Russia, Ukraine, and Crimea. These countries’ past conflicts have contributed to the current crisis. Crimea, as well as East Ukraine, wants to join Russia. This has led to past promises being broken and worldwide debate about what Russia should do. While countries around the world have responded to this conflict, their actions don’t appear to have a large effect on the actions of Ukraine or Russia. While Crimea has become a part of Russia, there is still a large struggle ensuing in Ukraine. With the way things are going now, there appears to be no end in sight. The beginning of conflicts between Russia and Ukraine began in the 1900s. Ukraine, for a while, was controlled by Poland. After World War …show more content…
96.7 percent of the voters supported secession. However, Ukraine, the United States, and the European Union do not consider this vote to be valid. This referendum only had two options: Become part of Russia or work towards independence (Yuhas). Therefore voters were not given much of an option, and voting could be considered invalid. Despite this, Vladimir Putin, the president in Russia, annexed Crimea on March 18, 2014. This angered Ukraine as well as the US and the EU. Putin is saying that the annexation of Crimea occurred because of the overthrow of Yanukovych, who was democratically elected. He also says that Crimea should have a “right of return” to Russia. In Putin’s Crimea address given on March 18, 2014, he says that “the decision on joining [Russia] was made by the people themselves. Russia responded to that appeal and accepted Crimea and Sevastopol into its family. That’s natural; it couldn’t be any other way” (Top 10 Powerful Quotes). The US, on the other hand, is concerned about the sovereignty of state borders; the agreement made between Ukraine, Russia, the UK, and the US in 1991 promised Ukraine sovereignty. While Ukraine wants to be free of the former Soviet Union, Russia wants to continue to debate borders …show more content…
But after the pro-Russian president in Crimea was forced from office, Russian troops came in to support a pro-Russian government. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk says that the Crimean crisis has shifted from “political to military form, and the blame is on the Russian military” (Smith). Putin says otherwise. He says that some of his troops were already in Crimea, but that he hasn’t sent any additional troops. As the article by Catherine Shoichet shows, Putin isn’t admitting to anything. Since February 24, Russia has sent about 16,000 troops into Crimea. Despite the fact that Putin won’t admit his sending of additional troops, he does feel that he has a right to send more military forces into Ukraine. The reason that Russian forces were allowed into Crimea was because of a treaty that stated that the Black Sea Fleet could be based in Crimea, but Kiev had to agree upon any action of the forces (Smith). The problem, therefore, is that Putin didn’t gain the approval to send more

The EU and Russia are divided at the moment, and they are becoming more polarized to each other, as they approach each other’s dominions. The EU wishes to strength its group, while adding more countries to its ranks, and decreasing the power of Russia. Russia sees their advances on its former territories and “President Putin saw this new step of westernization occurring in the redefined "Eastern Europe" as an "assault" against Russian strategic interests and decided to combat the process of rapprochement between these states and the European Union” (Naumescu). Russia is getting weaker as oil prices drop, and as they lose their interests to the west, but as they use violence and no diplomacy to act on their own selfish needs, the international community or NATO will get involved. The hostile annexing of Crimea is still not recognized internationally.…

The ultimate goal for the war, according to Hitler’s rhetoric, was to secure living space for the Germans. Realistically this translated to the creation of colonial extraction extorted upon Europeans who had been dehumanized by Nazi propaganda. The rich growing fields of Ukraine would supply the Third Reich with enough grain that they wouldn’t need to import, reducing the necessity for a strong navy; if a war against Britain ever came about their naval powers would never be topped by the Third Reich’s. The rich oil fields of the Caucuses would keep the Panzer tanks, Junker bombers, Volkswagens, and the various other machineries of war and industry crucial for maintaining a strong Germany afloat for years. Thus it makes sense that the Nazi’s, free from the fear of an immediate war in France, would invade Russia while she was still weak.…
