Many of us now use illusion to escape from reality because it’s either we are having a bad day, problems with our love ones, or we just want to get out of our routine and have our own fantasy, but not only do adults have illusion but also children have illusion. The definition for illusion is something that tricks us into believing a dishonest idea. In the play “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams he used three different characters who live in a life of illusion. Tom, Amanda, and Laura each have different kinds of illusion but use it for the same reason to escape the world they are living. William Tennesse used Amanda to have the most illusion to escape her reality.

Even though Tom is the man of the house he always had to deal with his mom nagging everyday and tom escapes from it by leaving to the movies. Tom later realized that him going to the movies was his adventure to escape reality but notice that he was just seeing it and not having physical experience, which made him think to follow his dad’s steps to run away. Even though he knew taking an action to run away and leave his family behind will break their hearts. In scene one of The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee showed a good example of showing how nagging Amanda is towards Tom “Eat you food leisurely, son, and really enjoy it. A well cooked meal has lots of delicate flavors that have to be held in the mouth for appreciation. So chew your food and give you salivary glands a chance to function!” (6) This quote describe why Tom used the movies to escape Amanda’s demanding instructions on how to eat and what to eat. Not only did Amanda tell Tom what to eat, and how to eat but also demanded how to quit smoking. In scene four Tennessee revealed that Amanda knew that Tom wants to run away and follow his dad steps, she said “Very well, then. Then do it! All four of the family members lived their life as an illusion from hiding from the reality. Tom escape from reality by going to the movies, Laura escapes by hiding behind her delicate glass unicorns and Amanda escapes by going back to the old young days she had. Even though they all were trying to stay hidden from reality Tom stood up and took the step to reach out for his dreams by leaving his family.
