On September 11 2001, America changed. The terrorist attacks that took the lives of thousands called for immediate actions to take place. The opening the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, nicknamed Gitmo, was one of the first actions that President Bush took in the fight against terrorism. Now one person could have predicted the enormous conflict that the prison would be apart of years later. As prison was issued to close by newly elected President Obama, many raised the question, is the camp necessary? The Guantanamo Bay detention camp is a legal and necessary part of the way that The United States America defends against terrorism, because issues like torture are need to protect the our land, the detaining of prisoners are preventing current and future attacks that threaten our citizens, and every little action that happens at Gitmo has a purpose.

Obama said that Guantanamo has “drain[ed] military resources, with nearly $450 million spent last year alone to keep it running”(Ignore Obama's). Many people think that the living conditions at Guantanamo Bay are terrible and unlivable. But even in this quote the President of The United States, who closed the prison, stated that millions of dollars were spent on the camp in just one year. If this much money was spent in one year to maintain the prison, the living conditions at Guantanamo Bay are not that bad. This correlates to about 2.7 million dollars being spent per prisoner (Warner). With this amount of money, the prison could be efficiently operated and allow for the prisoners needs to be meet.
