Dr. Chitra Divakaruni, author of One Amazing Thing, was able to express this to every incoming first year student at Appalachian State University. During the short time Dr. Divakaruni was on stage, she discussed many different things, from the book that she wrote for all incoming Appalachian State students, to the times that that she has experienced conflict in her life. Dr. Divakaruni’s speech connects to the course ‘Conflict and Peace’ because she discussed Hurricane Katrina, she gave details about a lady she came in contact with that had been abused in some way, and her book that she wrote is nothing shy of a being strictly about conflict and resolution. I will be using stories told by Dr. Divakaruni, and her book One Amazing Thing to support my thoughts. In John Lederach’s (2001) article, Five Qualities of Practce in Support of Reconciliation Process, he argues that the path to forgiveness and reconciliation on a global scale is a process, not just a choice. The five qualities of practice he identifies are: 1. Reconciliation as relationship centric – here Lederach (2001) explains that reconciliation starts with the relationship not just the “issues” between those involved in the conflict. 2. Reconciliation as accompaniment – He explains when a third party becomes involved in trying to resolve a conflict (a mediator)…

Unwind by Neal Shusterman “The process by which a child is both terminated and yet kept alive is called ‘unwinding’” (Shusterman 1). This principle is stated in The Bill of Life, a set of amendments created by a future society to end the Second Civil War between two parties called Pro-Choice and Pro-Life. Part of this proposal includes unwinding, which is the idea where a parent can “abort” their child between the ages of thirteen and eighteen to harvest their organs for others’ benefit.…

In our recent class election I voted for Kenyatta, simply because we shared a lot of the same ideas. For example, we share the same views on abortions. We both agree that abortion should be legal in the United States. And even though she doesn’t state what she personally believes on the matter, she does give excellent justification for her decision. In addition, we basically have the same belief on our second amendment rights.…

Conflict is used in most literature, and it was what keeps the reader reading. The definition of conflict is a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one. I believe that to make a good story you will need some type of conflict to grab the readers. Sometimes conflict has revenge in it, revenge is the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands. Conflict can be a good or bad thing because conflict can encourage people to grow, helps people find common ground, and healthy conflicts often end with a win-win resolution.…
